Chippewas head west next weekend for a four-game set at San Francisco
HOUSTON – The Central Michigan baseball found itself in an 8-3 hole after four innings on Sunday before dropping a 9-6 decision to Houston Christian at Husky Field in the finale of their season-opening four-game series.
The Chippewas (1-3) head to San Francisco four a four-game set next weekend.
CMU committed four errors for the second straight game and four of Houston Christian's runs were unearned.
"We had a couple chances to make some plays that we didn't," second-year CMU coach Jake Sabol said. "We dropped a flyball in the outfield with two outs, we didn't make a play on the infield, we over ran a ball in right field.
"We've got a clean up our defense. I think that was a huge thing this weekend, not making plays when we needed to and it put our offense in a position to fight from behind the entire time.
"We've got to correct it, get back to practice, get a little bit better there."
Leadoff man Aaron Piasecki had three hits and Jake Kutella, the No. 3 hitter, had two to lead CMU's 11-hit attack. Spencer Verburg had a two-run double in the sixth inning and the Chippewas scratched out on unearned run in the ninth to make a game of it.
"As the last four or five innings played out, we started to do some things that showed some positive results," Sabol said. "We had better at-bats, we had loud contact, we found the barrel, we hit some balls at guys, we made some plays, we worked to put some guys on base and we had some good performance in relief – we had some guys come in and get some big-time outs to keep it there and allow our offense to chip away.
"We wanted to feel like we were leaving the weekend on a positive note and we did that. I think they have a little bit of confidence as we wrap up."
CMU starter Alejandro Espinoza allowed eight runs (five earned) on eight hits while striking out two and walking one over four innings. Max Hammond, Carter Campeau, Quin Konuszewski and Nate Ross pitched in relief.
