Martel’s performance marked her ninth 15-plus save outing; five unique scorers for CMU, two freshmen
BEVERLY HILLS, Mich. — Fresh-off her first Mid-American Conference Goalkeeper of the Week award of 2025, senior Alexa Martel (Rochester, N.Y. / Greece Olympia) tallied 16 saves against eighth-ranked Michigan Wednesday night in a 19-5 loss at the Detroit Country Day Fieldhouse.
Â
The performance came two shy of her own single-game record set as a sophomore, marking her ninth career game of at least 15 saves. Martel posted eight saves in the first quarter alone, 12 in the first half.
Â
The Chippewas' five goals came from five unique scorers, led off by Kelsey Barratt (Voorhees, N.J. / Eastern) and Sadie Hinkle (Medina, Ohio / Medina) in the first quarter. Hinkle's first goal of the year netted Hanna Wenger's (Loveland, Ohio / Loveland) second of the season.
Â
A pair of freshmen midfielders found the back of the net as Katherine Erickson (St. Charles, Ill. / North) and Caye Kalbacher (Austin, Texas / Stephen F. Austin) each scored. The third quarter strike from Erickson marked her first collegiate goal; Kalbacher's in the fourth was her second to start her career, scoring in back-to-back games.
Â
Senior Maggie Merrill (Marriottsville, Md. / Marriotts Ridge) scored her second goal of the season with just under five minutes to go.
Â
Central Michigan Lacrosse stays in the Big Ten this weekend with a trip to face Oregon (Sat., 5 p.m. ET). In their lone previous meeting, the Chippewas defeated the Ducks, 12-11 in overtime, in Mount Pleasant in 2022.
