Morson powered in 26 points, CMU sweeps the Broncos for the first time since 2021
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. — "We talk about being the best MAC team in Michigan, and we did that this year."
Central Michigan Women's Basketball took down Western Michigan, 56-43, to complete a season sweep of its arch-rival. The Chippewas collected their sweep of Eastern Michigan Wednesday night to make Saturday's victory mark the first season sweep of both Mid-American Conference foes in Michigan since 2019-20.
Madi Morson (Canton, Mich. / Salem) posted her seventh 20-point outing, 26 points, her second-most in a game this season behind the 32-point barrage at Dayton (Dec. 15).
"It was a quiet 26," second-year Head Coach Kristin Haynie chuckled, "I had no idea. She's just a smooth player. She's truly a special talent and what a special kid."
The Chippewas posted a 12-4 run over the final six minutes of the first quarter, book-ended by three-pointers from Morson and Jess Lawson (Las Vegas, Nev. / Legacy), to take a 16-10 lead. The pair each climbed to double digits in scoring in the second.
The Broncos hit from beyond the arc to slip back within one possession, 26-23, early in the third quarter. CMU responded with a 13-2 run, powered by Ayanna-Sarai Darrington (Lexington, Ky. / Frederick Douglass). The freshman center had six points in the run after just three in the first half.
"Our players have to get her the ball. She's down there posting up and doing a good job, and we're missing her. We really talked about, at halftime, that she needs more touches. Ana gets beat up down there, but she continues to be resilient and fight on."
The trio of Morson, Lawson and Darrington accounted for all of CMU's first 41 points. This was likely the gameplan as Lisa Tesson (Montreal, Quebec / Royal Crown) and Demetria Prewitt (Madison, Wis. / La Follette) led a strong effort in off-ball assignments.
Tesson's objective: to keep WMU's Marina Asensio away from the bucket.
"Everyone who guarded her did a really good job, but Lisa was on her most of the game. We had [Asensio] frustrated in the first game and we said we needed to match that physicality in this game, and we did that."
For Prewitt, who missed Wednesday's bout in Ypsilanti for an ankle injury, it was to lock in defensively and rebound in the paint.
"I'm proud of Meachie because she didn't play last game for an ankle injury. Rebounding is hard, it's gritty, and she didn't let the ankle affect her. She had a really good game; we called her out in the locker room and she deserves it."
Prewitt led the game with 10 rebounds in 16 minutes played. Tesson played a team-high 36 minutes.
"A lot of people who played, they did the little things that don't show up on stat sheets. It was a great, all-around team effort."
Darrington and Lawson finished with identical 11-point, nine-rebound efforts in support of Morson's 26 points. Darrington collected six rebounds on the offensive end, Lawson had eight on the defensive end. The pair shot 4-for-8 each from the field. Darrington also drew eight of the Broncos' 20 fouls.
The victory, alongside an 86-57 win for the Chippewa men in Kalamazoo, clinched an academic-year sweep of Western Michigan for CMU Football, Women's Basketball and Men's Basketball for the first time since 1990-91.
"That's excellent. That's what rivalries are for: just to compete and for all three sports to do that, it's pretty amazing."
Central Michigan Women's Basketball will stay in town to host league-leader Ball State Wednesday night (6:30 p.m. ET). The Cardinals have dropped back-to-back MAC games to Toledo (Feb. 19) and Kent State (Feb. 22) after a 12-0 start in league play.
