A loss in an extra inning game and a back-and-forth day chart the two losses for softball on day one of the 2025 season.
TROY, Ala. – The Central Michigan Softball Team dropped two games in the first day of its 2025 campaign to North Texas and Troy. CMU fell in the morning game to the Mean Green, 5-3 in eight innings, and in the night cap to the host Trojans, 7-4.
The Chippewas will play Samford and Tennessee State on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. (ET) and 6:00 p.m. (ET) respectively.
Game 1
Brooklyn Compau took the start for the Chippewas in their first game as she pitched five innings, striking out five along the way.
The Chippewas recorded eight hits in the loss, with Keira Tolmie, Carly Sleeman and Grace Koenig each charting two.
North Texas struck first in the second inning with an RBI double and that runner scored after a throwing error in attempt to catch her stealing.
In the fourth inning, Maddie Springer hit a sacrifice fly to score Ashley Bila, who entered as a pinch runner for London Williams. Williams, a freshman from Trenton, Mich., recorded her first career hit with a single to right field.
Another throwing error for the Chippewas allowed the Mean Green to score their third run in the fourth inning.
In the bottom of the seventh, Sleeman came up with a key single up the middle that scored Springer and Koenig to tie game at 3-3.
Due to the non-conference nature of the game, the eighth inning started in international tiebreaker, with a North Texas player on second base. The Mean Green would score their go ahead two runs via home run that would ultimately be the deciding factor.
Cierra Laska entered the circle in the sixth inning and faced the final 10 batters. Laska took the decision in the game since she entered with the game tied at three.
Game 2
Mackenzie made her first start of the season for CMU and did not allow a hit to the Troy Trojans until the fifth inning when the hosts grabbed three runs on three hits.
CMU built a 2-0 lead heading into the bottom of the fifth. The Chippewas grabbed their first run in the third with a sacrifice fly from Keira Tolmie that scored Maddie Springer. In the top of the fifth, Emma Lotus charted an RBI single up the middle to score Grace Koenig.
Entering the sixth inning trailing by three, Tori Briggs grabbed her first collegiate hit with a double to right center to bring CMU within two at 4-6. Rachel Cairo, who pinch hit for the Chippewas, and Jenna Kuzara both scored on the double.
Troy answered with two more home runs in the bottom of the sixth for the final score of 7-4.
The Chippewas recorded six total hits in the game, but their two defensive errors in the fifth kept the door open for the Trojans,
Langan threw 5.0 complete innings while facing 20 batters while striking out three. Madison Wendel who made her collegiate debut for CMU faced four, and Laska closed out the game in her second relief appearance of the game to face the final three.
