Chippewas open on 11-4 run with 10 of Morson’s 21, Darrington scores 21 of 23 in the second half
TOLEDO, Ohio — Central Michigan Women's Basketball fell to Mid-American Conference championship contender Toledo Saturday, 80-70, at Savage Arena.
Ayanna-Sarai Darrington (Lexington, Ky. / Frederick Douglass) and Madi Morson (Canton, Mich. / Salem) each eclipse 20 points, their fourth and ninth 20-point outings, respectively. Darrington led the game with 23 points—Morson added 21—and tallied 13 rebounds for her seventh double-double.
Morson opened the game with 10 of the Chippewas' 11 points to lead an 11-4 opening run, including a pair of three-pointers. CMU ran out to its largest lead of the game, 18-9, with a minute left in the first. The Rockets responded with five of a 7-0 run before the end of the quarter to draw within a bucket early in the second.
A back-and-forth second quarter saw Toledo take its first lead, 26-25, with 2:44 left before halftime. The lead changed hands six times in six straight possessions before the one-minute warning of the half. Demetria Prewitt (Madison, Wis. / La Follette) led the quarter with six points—she entered the game in need of seven to reach 1,000 career points between Kirkwood Community College and CMU.
Morson led the Chippewas with 16 points at half as she shot 7-of-9 from the field. At that time, Darrington had collected just a pair of her nine free throws and had yet to score from the field.
Darrington scored 11 points, tallied five rebounds in the third to capture her double-double. Toledo punched in a 10-0 run early in the second half to reach a 48-39 margin. Prewitt eclipsed 1,000 career points on a bucket with 27 seconds left in the quarter to pull CMU back to a one-possession game, 58-53.
Darrington added another 10 points in the fourth through another perfect six attempts from the free throw line—she finished 9-of-9 from the stripe. Toledo used a 10-2 run early in the fourth to mark its largest lead of the game, 72-59, with seven minutes to play. The Chippewas immediately responded with a quick 7-0 run but never pulled in any closer than six points.

The arch-rivals still must contend with ninth-place Northern Illinois (13-15; 6-10 MAC), who defeated visiting Bowling Green, 84-77, in double-overtime.
