Chippewas Open MAC play on Sunday at home against Kent State
BUFFALO, N.Y. – A happy homecoming for Celia Dow. And her timing could not have been better.
Dow scored with just 3 seconds remaining to lift the Central Michigan lacrosse team to a thrilling 14-13 nonconference victory over Canisius on Wednesday at the Golden Griffins' Demske Sports Complex.
It was the first win of the season for CMU (1-6), which opens Mid-American Conference play at home against Kent State on Sunday, March 16.
Dow, who hails from Penfield, N.Y., about 85 miles east of the Canisius campus, was the hero in a game that was tied eight times. Both teams were credited with 29 shots and the Chippewas held a 22-20 edge in shots on goal.
Skye DePrado scored four goals to lead the Chippewas and Maggie Merrill, Hanna Wenger, Reagan Martinsen, and Sadie Hinkle added two apiece.
A DePrado goal, which came on a free position shot, tied the game at 13 with 4:10 remaining.
Alexa Martel made seven saves in goal for the Chippewas. Her final save came with just over a minute remaining to preserve the 13-13 tie.
Canisius (3-5) saw its win streak end at two games.
