Second Day Split for Softball in Florida

The Chippewas grabbed a win after dropping the first game of the day in the second day of the Make it Happen Games.
MADEIRA BEACH, Fla. – After falling to Chattanooga in the first game of day two in Florida, the Chippewas bounced back with a six-inning run-rule victory over Niagara.
Against the Mocs in the first game, Central Michigan scored in the top of the first inning with an RBI double from Grace Koenig to score Tori Briggs, who led the game off with a double herself.
Chattanooga answered in the bottom half of the inning with a three-run home run that would ultimately be the final score of the early afternoon game.
Brooklyn Compau took the start for the Chippewas and threw four complete innings where she issued six hits. Cierra Laska entered in relief for CMU to face the final eight batters where she struck out one batter and allowed two hits over two complete innings of work.
Maddison Diekman had the only other hit in the game for the Chippewas in the top of the fifth inning.
In the nightcap, CMU really found their bats and ignited for the victory to close the day.
Niagara took the lead in the top of the first and scored again in the third to hold a 2-0 tilt until CMU answered in the bottom half of the third to even the score.
The Chippewas scored their runs with RBI singles from Briggs and Carly Sleeman.
In the fourth CMU added another run with a solo home run from London Williams, her second of the season and her young career.
Central Michigan busted the game open in the fifth inning with six runs. Sleeman started the scoring with a solo shot, followed by a single by Allyssa Hollo. Koenig moved Hollo to third with a sacrifice bunt. A fielder's choice hit from Rachel Cairo reached scored Hollo; 5-2 Chippewas.
Jenna Kuzara was hit by a pitch, Keira Tolmie drew a walk, and a double from Williams scored the two.
Maddie Springer also drew a walk and was later scored after back-to-back wild pitches from the Purple Eagle pitcher and Williams also scored; 9-2 CMU.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, Tolmie walked the game off with her first round-tripper of the season to reach the 10-2 decision – their second run-rule victory of the season.
The Chippewas will close out the Make it Happen Games at 9 am on Sunday morning when the team faces the Siena Saints again for a rematch from the 10-inning matchup on Friday afternoon.
