DePrado, Barratt collect hat tricks; late Chippewa lead slips away
NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, N.Y. — Central Michigan Lacrosse dropped the first of its two-game swing to Western New York Sunday in a 12-11 overtime thriller at reigning Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Champion Niagara.
Â
Skye DePrado (Pittsburgh, Pa. / North Allegheny) collected five points via four goals in her second start of the season as she and Kelsey Barratt (Voorhees, N.J. / Eastern) notched the first two hat tricks of the season, scoring four of CMU's last five goals.
Â
Two of Barratt's three strikes recorded a lead change, once at 2-1 late in the first then at 7-6 just past the midway point in the third.
Â
The contest was dominated by scoring runs from both sides. CMU scored four straight in response to Niagara's opener, followed by five from the Purple Eagles, then six more from the Chippewas before a five-goal streak led to the overtime result.
Â
Alexa Martel (Rochester, N.Y. / Greece Olympia) put together 16 saves for a .571 save percentage, including five in the first and fourth quarters.
Â
Jozy Allen (Cincinnati, Ohio / Sycamore) marked career highs of six ground balls (t-10th all-time) and five caused turnovers (t-2nd all-time), including a crucial takeaway in the final seconds of regulation to force the extra period. CMU collected 11 caused turnovers on 14 Niagara giveaways.
Â
Allen's performance pushed her ahead of Hailie Moore '24 for second all-time in career caused turnovers (63) and is now just two away from passing Assistant Coach Avery Wagnon '24 for 10th in career ground balls.
Â
Elyse DeFrank (Frankfort, Ill. / Lincoln-Way East) became the third freshman to notch her first career goal as the second in the six-goal run in the third quarter, tying the contest, 6-6.
Â
Central Michigan Lacrosse remains in the Buffalo area this week to visit Canisius Wednesday (4 p.m. ET), then returns to Mount Pleasant next Sunday to host Kent State (Noon ET) for the start of Mid-American Conference play.
