KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Western Michigan collected nine hits, all of them singles, and drew five walks on Saturday in downing Central Michigan, 4-2, in the nightcap of a Mid-American Conference baseball doubleheader at Robert J. Bobb Stadium.
The win gave the Broncos, 6-0 winners in the opener, a sweep of the twinbill and of the three-game series.
The Chippewas are 17-30, 9-15 MAC. They are in eighth place in the league standings. The top six teams earn a berth in the conference tournament. Western is 16-27, 11-13.
The Chippewas go to Michigan for a nonconference game on Tuesday, May 6 (4 p.m.) and then entertain Eastern Michigan in a MAC series from May 9-11. CMU has six conference games remaining.
Western Michigan scored two runs in the seventh inning of the nightcap on Saturday to break a 2-2 tie. The Broncos got three hits and two walks, the second of which came with the bases loaded, in scoring their two runs.
The Chippewas managed just one hit – a two-out double by Cole Kwiatkowski in the eighth inning – the rest of the way.
CMU scored both of its runs in the sixth inning when Aaron Piasecki singled and Cayden Smith was hit by a pitch. Cole Prout bunted both into scoring position and Piasecki scored on a wild pitch. Smith then scored on a Jake Kutella groundout.
CMU starter Hayden Bailey (3-2) allowed three runs on seven hits over six innings in taking the loss. He struck out seven, matching his career high. Nate Ross and Smith pitched in relief.
The Chippewas managed just three hits off Western's Joey Wizceb in the opener. Wizceb struck out three and walked two in going the distance.
Zach Knowlton doubled for the Chippewas, while Cole Kwiatkowski and Smith each singled.
Western took the lead with three runs in the second inning off Chippewa starter Jared Hanson (2-3).
Hanson allowed four runs (three earned) on six hits, walked one, and struck out three over five innings in taking the loss. Justin Morgan and Liam Stumpf each pitched in relief.
