Chippewas outpace Wright State in shots, second-half corners but come up empty
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. — Central Michigan Soccer finished the 2025 nonconference slate on the wrong end of a 1-0 result Thursday afternoon against Wright State at the CMU Soccer Complex.
Â
The Chippewas fell behind 90 seconds into the match as the Raiders recovered a loose ball behind midfield and sent ahead a pass that covered more than half the field, leaving a one-on-one matchup to drive and score.
Â
"Really disappointed with the result," Head Coach Jeremy Groves said. "I thought we did enough to get something from the game. The little details are really hurting us right now."
Â
Central Michigan battled on despite the early misstep to hold Wright State without another on-target attempt for the remainder of the half.
Â
The offense came back from intermission ready to push, with multiple runs and set pieces to capitalize on. Defender Abby Freese (Dillsburg, Pa. / Northern) accumulated four attempts in close via corners, including an on-frame attempt in the 65th minute.
Â
Alyssa Di-Campli (Queanbeyan, Australia / St. Clare's) led the tally with two shots on-goal, one in each half.
Â
"I'm not sure how we didn't score in the second half. We created many quality moments."
Â
Freese and Di-Campli were two of six freshmen in the lineup for the Chippewas Thursday, the most through the season's first six matches, alongside Jimena Perez Ayala (Monterrey, Mexico / ASF Monterrey), Kylee Weed (Jackson, Mich. / Northwest), Liv Moulton (Rochdale, England / Sixth Form) and Sofia Spano (Bloomfield Hills, Mich. / Bloomfield Hills).
Â
"Our young team is getting better ever week. I'm not sure the results are reflecting our performances, but we have to put together a full 90 minutes now that we are moving into conference play."
Â
The Chippewas open the Mid-American Conference slate Sunday, hosting Ohio for a 1 p.m. kickoff.
