Evenly matched squads separated by a shot narrowly out of reach for the Chippewas in the 14th minute
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. — Central Michigan Soccer had its Mid-American Conference opener slip through its fingertips Sunday in a 1-0 loss to Ohio.
The deciding goal came early in the 14th minute as a chip shot from well outside the 18' carried into the upper-left corner of starting keeper Taylor Primack's (Lindenhurst, Ill. / Lakes Community) goal, where the shot slipped through her grasp at the top of her leap.
The Chippewas and Bobcats were split virtually down the middle across the stat sheet: CMU led in on-target shots, 6-5, Ohio took a 3-1 advantage in corners while fouls and possession time were both even.
Ella Betzold (Essexville, Mich. / Garber) led a barrage going into the half with all three of her on-target attempts in the final six minutes of the first—twice in one-on-one scenarios with Bobcats keeper Celeste Sloma.
The Chippewas recorded two team saves, both of which were tallied by freshman center back Abby Freese (Dillsburg, Pa. / Northern). Freese was in position for a rebound strike late in the first half, then had a header sent toward her after a tight cross was laid near the 6' in the 63rd minute; both team saves came against two of Ohio's stronger attempts at adding an insurance goal.
Central Michigan Soccer returns to the road Thursday to visit Ball State for a 4 p.m. ET kickoff in Muncie, Ind, then gets a week hiatus before hosting Toledo the following Thursday night (Sept. 25; 7 p.m. ET) for the Chippewas' first home match under the lights.
