Camryn surpasses 100 career points, Ryon gets a hat trick, Freshmen Eckenroth and Rulli each log first career goals; longest streak since 2009
Hamilton, N.Y. – Central Michigan Field Hockey defeated Long Island Saturday 9-6, in a neutral site game hosted by Colgate to earn their second straight weekend sweep.
The Chippewas have now won four games in a row, the last time CMU has achieved that feat was in 2009, where the team outscored their opponents, 11-3. Over the latest four game stretch, CMU has outscored opponents 17-8.
The nine goals scored in Saturday's game is the most in a single game since 1997, when the Chippewas took down Louisville 9-0 (Nov. 6). It also marks the seventh most goals scored in a single game in program history and is tied for the most since 1985.
A total of eight Chippewas either recorded a goal or an assist, five scored at least one goal, three earned assists.
"It was nice that our attack was generated by more than one person or more than two people. Our subbing rotation and the lines that were out there definitely made the most of their minutes." CMU Head Coach Jennifer Johnstone said of the team's performance.
Senior Mallory Camryn scored twice in the effort to eclipse 100 career points, combined between her first season-plus at CMU, and her previous two at Maine. She has collected 44 points in her 23 games in the Maroon & Gold.
Sophomore Carolena Ryon led the day, recording three goals, upping her season total to six. Freshman Mora Rulli notched two goals, the first being her first collegiate goal, and logged two assists.
Freshman Bri Eckenroth scored in the second quarter, the first goal of her collegiate career. Junior Cameron Pluciennik logged her second goal of the season and recorded an assist. Senior Hailey Bainer, Freshman Teah Savignano, and Sophomore Peyton Pallman each recorded an assist.
On the defensive end, Freshman Pleun Van Gent recorded her second defensive save of the weekend, her third of the season.
"We're excited, the hat trick, the 100 points, Cam scoring, it was exciting to see the offense we were able to generate today. With that said, there were more goals than we would have liked. So again, we have a lot to clean up defensively with our individual defense, marking management, keeping the ball out of the cage generally."
Graduate Student Ashley Cogger started the game in the cage, before being relieved by sophomore Jenna Billig. Cogger allowed three goals and recorded nine saves, while Billig allowed three and logged three saves.
"The big thing is we just won games. We played back-to-back. We traveled to upstate New York on a bus for 11 hours. I think it's a huge tribute to our fitness level and the work that the girls did this summer to come in and be prepared so that we could succeed on weekends like this."
Central Michigan Field Hockey comes back to Mount Pleasant Friday Sept. 19 to open MAC play against James Madison.
