CMU closes with a 282 to set program 54-hole scoring mark
MUNCIE, Ind. – More success, more records.
The Central Michigan men's golf team closed the book on another record-setting performance on Sunday, led by Philippe Yturralde.
Yturralde shot a final-round 2-under par 68 to finish with a 7-under 203 and a tie for sixth place in an 83-player field in the Earl Yestingmeier Invitational at Delaware Country Club.
Yturralde's 203 is a program record for aggregate score, and his 7-under ties the program best for score in relation to par. The redshirt junior led the Chippewas to a final-round 282 team score and a program record 839 54-hole total.
The Chippewas, who shot 287-270 – 557 in Saturday's first two rounds, set program standards for 18-, 36- and 54-hole totals in the tournament. They broke the marks they set in their last tournament, the Joe Feaganes Invitational in Huntington, W. Va., on Sept. 8-9.
I'm very happy, CMU coach Kevin Jennings said. I won't say satisfied, but at this very second, I'm content with how the guys played and how they competed.
They set goals for themselves and continue to elevate the program and write the good pages in their legacy and they're moving us in the right direction and I'm very happy for them and very happy with the work that they've put in. They have bought in to what we're doing in this program and they continue to display the discipline and the tenacity and the resilience to continue to compete at a high level.
Yturralde on Saturday shot a 6-under 64 in the second round to tie the program mark for score in relation to par and break his own program record (66) for aggregate score.
(Saturday) I hit the ball really good all day and I kind of dialed it in a little bit more in the second round, said Yturralde, who made seven birdies in his second round on Saturday after opening with a 1-over 71. I was hitting it pretty long in the first round and I played for that in the second round and made a few putts and shot 6-under, which feels great. Today I putted really good.
Yturralde's 7-under 54-hole total ties teammate Keith Hunter for the best in program history, and his 203 total betters the 206 Hunter posted at the Feaganes. Hunter and Yturralde now share the relation-to-par mark.
The Chippewas finished fifth in the 13-team field. They were tied for ninth after Saturday's first round and entered Sunday's final round in sixth place.
I think we've just matured as a team, said Yturralde, a team co-captain alongside Hunter. We all came in really young, and all had to learn college golf. It's not really like junior golf; it's a little harder. We all have different traits that we can all draw from and I think we're coming together, and we're buying in and, honestly, we're having a little bit more fun too.
Hunter posted a 1-under 69 on Sunday to finish at 2-under 208 and tied for 15th, while Jeffrey Andrus shot a 2-over 72 to finish at 3-over 213 and among a group tied for 31st.
Also for the Chippewas, freshman Hudson Vedder posted a 3-over 73 and finished tied for 57th at 220, while sophomore Jeffrey Sager shot 4-over 74 and finished tied for 75th at 223.
CMU's Nicholas Kilgore, playing as an individual, closed with a 73 for a 237 total.
Ball State, playing on its home course, posted a final-round 277 for an 813 total and a three-shot win over Butler. Ball State teammates Luke Johnson and Samuel Harris shared medalist honors as both finished at 12-under 198.
