CMU redshirt junior (5-under) continues torrid start
BENTON HARBOR, Mich. – Central Michigan's Philippe Yturralde continued his hot start to the men's golf season, opening with a 2-under par 68 and following with a 3-under 67 on Sunday during the first two rounds of the inaugural Jim DeLapa Collegiate at storied Point O' Woods Golf & Country Club.
Yturralde, a redshirt junior, stands at 5-under and tied for fifth place in the 75-player field.
The final round of the 13-team event is scheduled for Monday (9 a.m.).
Yturralde has logged eight rounds in the fall season, six of them at or below par, and he is averaging 69.0. He set the CMU program record last week for 18-hole aggregate score when he shot a second-round 64 in the Earl Yestingmeier Invitational, hosted by Ball State, in Muncie, Ind.
That 6-under 64 tied the program mark for score in relation to par, and he finished the 54-hole event with a program record 203.
Yturralde, who stands five shots behind the leader, Michigan's Dean Muratore (66-64), made six birdies against four bogeys in the first round on Sunday, and he followed with four birdies against just one bogey in the second.
His 10 birdies ties him for the fourth most in the field. Muratore leads with 12.
The Chippewas posted a 296 team score in the opening round and then carded a 292 in the second for a 588 total. They stand in 12th place.
Defending Ivy League champion Princeton (274-281 – 555) leads by one shot over three teams, Saint Mary's of California, Michigan and San Jose State, that are tied for second.
Also for the Chippewas on Sunday, Keith Hunter shot 75-73, Jeffrey Sager shot 74-77, Nicholas Kilgore shot 72-80, Jeffrey Andrus shot 79-76, and Hudson Vedder shot 80-76.
Hunter stands at 148 and is tied for 60th, while Sager (151) is in 65th place, Kilgore (152) is tied for 66th, Andrus (155) is 70th, and Vedder (156) is 71st. Kilgore is playing the tournament as an individual.
Muratore holds a two-shot lead over San Jose State's Kashav Mungali.
