Chippewas finished 1-under, breaking par for the third time in 5 stroke-play events this season
DADE CITY, Fla. – Central Michigan's Philippe Yturralde closed with a 6-under par 66 on Monday to finish tied for seventh in the Lake Jovita Invitational at Lake Jovita Golf & Country Club.
Yturralde, who opened the 54-hole tournament on Monday with a 1-over 73 and then shot a 2-under 70 in Monday's second round, finished at 7-under 209.
His 7-under tied the CMU men's program record for score in relation to par, set last fall by Yturralde and teammate Keith Hunter.
It marked the second time in five stroke-play events in the 2025-26 season that Yturralde, a redshirt junior from Steele Canyon, Calif., has posted a top-10 finish.
It was his fourth career top 10 and his 66 tied for the low score of the day.
"Philippe is a veteran and he's been developing well," CMU coach Kevin Jennings said. "He's pulled a lot of weight for this program. There's a couple things that we've been working on, and he's been working with his instructor in regards to his putting and his grip and his full swing and he's just starting to get better and better acquainted with that and more confidence in what he's doing. Really, he's just starting to tap into it."
Yturralde began the final round tied for 17th in the 88-player field and improved by 10 spots. He made six birdies and an eagle – that coming on the par 5 13th – against two bogeys. He carded 13 birdies over his 54 holes in the tournament, tying for 12th in the field.
Yturralde led the Chippewas to a final-round 288 team score and a 1-under-par 863 total and an eight-place finish in the 14-team field. CMU finished two shots behind seventh-place Loyola-Chicago.
It marked the third time this season that CMU has finished under par as a team in a tournament. The 'new' Chippewas – the program was resurrected for the 2022-23 season after a 37-year hiatus -- had not finished under par prior to this season.
"It's a testament to their dedication, their discipline, their desire to want to compete and continue to try to compete at the highest level possible," said Jennings, whose team finished ahead of the two other Mid-American Conference teams in the tournament, host Ball State (ninth) and Bowling Green (T10). "They're excited about being the top MAC school at this event and beating Ball State for the first time.
"There were a lot of teams that finished below us who were ranked higher than us (entering the tournament) and that's also a good thing. Everybody's excited and they should be happy about that, but we also understand that there's still more for us to tap into. This is very motivating for us and we're looking forward to continuing to compete and elevate what we're doing."
Hudson Vedder shot an even-par 72 for the Chippewas on Tuesday, while Hunter shot a 2-over 74, Jeffrey Andrus carded a 4-over 76, and Aydan Downer shot 81. Hunter finished tied for 33rd with a 217 total, while Vedder tied for 39th with a 219, which tied his season-best 54-hole score; Downer (223) tied for 58th.
CMU's Jeffrey Sager, playing as an individual, closed with a 2-over 74 and was among the group tied for 58th at 223.
Shane Ochs of Wright State closed with a 6-under 66 to finish at 13-under (203) for a two-shot victory over Richmond's Carson Baez.
Xavier posted a 279 team score to win the tournament with an 18-under 846, three shots better than runner-up Butler.
