Chippewas rally from double-digit first-half deficit; defensive muscle flexed after slow start
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. — "You're supposed to play your best basketball at this time of the year."
Central Michigan Women's Basketball won its fourth consecutive Mid-American Conference game, completed the season sweep of its Michigan rivals with a 70-67 result over Western Michigan Saturday.
The Chippewas also punched their ticket to the 2026 MAC Championship tournament (March 11-14), with a little help from a 62-51 Toledo win over Eastern Michigan.
"We grew up today," Head Coach Kristin Haynie said. "We executed down the stretch, super proud of their resilience and fight."
Madi Morson (Canton, Mich. / Salem) recorded her sixth consecutive 20-point game, her ninth of the last 10 outings. Eleven of her 25 points came in a crucial third quarter that cleaned the slate of a double-digit first-half deficit, including a three-point play at the end of the quarter.
"She's a bucket-getter. She's tough. They try and limit her points by being more physical, but she's so strong she can get and-ones. That was a good momentum changer for us."
Ayanna-Sarai Darrington (Lexington, Ky. / Frederick Douglass) posted ten of her 14 points in the fourth quarter to keep the Broncos at arm's length.
The senior duo of Demetria Prewitt (Madison, Wis. / La Follette) and Taylor Anderson (South Lyon, Mich. / East) took care of things behind the scenes. Prewitt tallied a career-high four steals to go with two blocks, Anderson led with eight rebounds as the pair chipped in a combined 16 points.
Tension built throughout the second half as neither team got away by more than two possessions, within one possession for the final six minutes. With a one-point lead, 68-67, Rylan Buschell (Belleville, Mich. / Belleville) was sent to the line to ice the game.
The Chippewas held WMU scoreless for over six minutes of game time, split nearly in half by the halftime buzzer, to recover from a double-digit deficit in the first half. CMU scored 11 points during that time to erase its slow start.
"Kudos to Western for making threes early on. We needed to tighten our defense up, our players did that. Our defense sparked our offense. We were able to get the momentum going into the half."
Central Michigan Women's Basketball heads to Oxford, Ohio Wednesday to visit Miami (OH) (Feb. 18, 7 p.m. ET), which just had its undefeated league season upended by Massachusetts, 65-64, on Saturday.
The Chippewas return to host the Minutewomen and a second consecutive Saturday twinbill with the CMU men Feb. 21 at 1 p.m. ET.
