Chippewas hold Minutewomen to season-low seven shots
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – Central Michigan Field Hockey fell to No. 4 Massachusetts 0-3 Sunday afternoon.
Central Michigan put on a defensive masterpiece through the first 30 minutes, holding UMass to just one shot, taken in the 28th minute for junior goalkeeper Jenna Billig's first save of the day.
In all, Billig recorded four saves through just over 50 minutes of playing time. She allowed the first Minutewomen goal three minutes into the second half off a successful attacking corner attempt.
The Minutewomen returned to the scoreboard with just over eight minutes remaining to take a two-goal lead. Billig was then replaced by freshman Judith Van Aartsen, who made her first career appearance.
Junior forward Carolena Ryon recorded the Chippewas lone shot on the day, coming as a result of a penalty corner drawn in the fourth quarter.
Massachusetts won the corner battle 1-5, led in total shots 1-7, and led in on-target shots 0-6.
Throughout the game, the Chippewas celebrated the 1976 Central Michigan Field Hockey team, who won both the State and regional AIAW Championships. After making the national tournament, the Chippewas battled to finish fifth overall nationally. In honor of the team Karen Karner, a 1998 Marcy Weston CMU Athletics Hall of Fame Honoree, and Diana Holmes were named honorary team captains.
