Courtney Shelton rejoined the Central Michigan women’s basketball staff as an assistant prior to the 2017-18 season as CMU has continued to solidify its reputation as the Mid-American Conference’s premier program and one of the very best mid-majors in the nation.
In June, 2022, head coach Heather Oesterle promoted Shelton to associate head coach.
In 2020-21, The Chippewas won the Mid-American Conference Tournament to earn a fourth consecutive bid to the NCAA Tournament, finishing with an 18-9 record, an RPI of 23, and a ranking of 12 in the CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Top 25 poll.
Led by First Team All-MAC guards Micaela Kelly and Molly Davis, the Chippewas knocked off regular-season champion and No. 1 seed Bowling Green, 77-72, in the tournament title game at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse in Cleveland.
The 2019-20 Chippewas finished 23-7, won a fourth-consecutive MAC regular-season championship, a fifth-straight MAC West title, claimed the No. 1 seed in the MAC Tournament, an NCAA Tournament berth, and a slew of individual postseason awards under first-year coach Heather Oesterle, a longtime assistant who took over the program prior to the ’19-20 season.
Shelton served as CMU’s video coordinator from 2013-15, helping the Chippewas to a MAC West title and a WNIT berth. In each of her three seasons since her return to the program, the Chippewas have won MAC West and overall league regular-season championships. Twice CMU has played in the NCAA Tournament during that time, highlighted by a run to the Sweet Sixteen in 2018.
The Chippewas have captured two MAC Tournament crowns during Shelton’s recent stint and have chalked up an astounding 96-29 won-loss record (61-12 in MAC play) over that four-year span.
Among Shelton’s duties is to focus on defense, the point guard position and to serve as an academic liaison to the players. She also serves as the program’s scouting coordinator, directs camps, aids with alumni functions, and is in charge of team communications and assists with social media efforts.
Shelton helped to coach guard Micaela Kelly, who leaves as one of the very best to ever play at CMU. During Kelly's four seasons in Mount Pleasant, she was named the 2020 MAC Player of the Year who, a two-time First Team All-MAC selection and was named to the league all-defensive team her sophomore, junior and senior seasons.
Kelly, who finished her brilliant career as the No.2 scorer all-time in program history (2,173 points), was selected by the Connecticut Sun in the WNBA draft in April 2021. She is the second Chippewa to be picked in the professional draft. CMU is the only MAC team to have more than one player selected in the 25-year history of the draft.
Shelton also coached former CMU great and current assistant coach, Presley Hudson, who left after the 2018-19 season having put together one of the best careers in program and MAC history. Hudson is the all-time leading scorer and assist-maker in program history. She is one of six players – Crystal Bradford, Tinara Moore, Reyna Frost, Cassie Breen and Micaela Kelly – who have played at CMU and gone on to play professionally during Shelton’s time in the program.
Shelton spent the 2015-16 and ’16-17 seasons as an assistant at Northwood, helping the Timberwolves to a combined 33-23 record during her tenure.
Shelton was a three-year starter at Northern Illinois and captained the Huskies as a senior in 2011-12. She led NIU in assists during both her junior and senior seasons, and ranks 11th in program history with 108 3-pointers.
Shelton, a native of Roscoe, Ill., earned her bachelor’s degree in communications from NIU in 2012, and later completed her master’s degree at CMU.
