MOUNT PLEASANT -- Central Michigan University won a defensive battle in Mid-American Conference women's basketball play here Wednesday night with Bowling Green State University, 42-30.
It was the lowest a Chippewa squad had held an opponent since an 80-25 win in 1977 over Missouri-St. Louis in 1977, and it was also the lowest winning total for a CMU squad since posting a 36-35 win over Michigan State in 1972. The 30 points was the Falcons' lowest total in school history.
The win upped CMU's record to 9-11 for the season, 3-6 in MAC play while BGSU dropped to 9-10 and 2-6.
Good defense and poor shooting dominated the night's action as no player in the game reached double figures.
CMU shot 26 percent from the floor on 13-of-50 compared the the Falcons' 11-of-47 for 23.4 percent. BGSU hit just three-of-30 from behind the three-point line.
An indication of the difficult both teams had shooting was that the Chippewas matched their point total with 42 rebounds and the Falcons had more rebounds than points with 36. In fact, the only player in twin digits in the game was Francine Miller with 11 rebounds for the losers.
CMU jumped out to a 9-1 lead and never trailed. The largest lead in the first half was 11 at 20-9 with 8:00 remaining while the final margin of 12 was the Chippewas' biggest of the game.
Erin Kuhl led CMU with eight points followed by Lindsay Mecoli and Casey Manning with seven each.Miller paced the Falcons with eight.
The Chippewas are idle until Monday, February 10, when they play at Ohio University.
