Chippewas Slip By Akron in Overtime, 78-77

MOUNT PLEASANT -- Freshman guard Candace Wilson drilled a three-pointer with 38 seconds remaining in overtime to give Central Michigan University a 78-77 Mid-American Conference win over the University of Akron here Monday night.
For Wilson, it was extra special as she hails from Akron where she prepped at Central Hower High.
The victory upped CMU's record to 10-14 for the season and 4-9 in MAC action. The Zips drop to 3-23 overall and 3-12 in league action.
The game was tied at 70-70 in regulation thanks Sharonda Hurd's free throw with 8.8 seconds to play.
The two teams traded baskets throughout the overtime with the Zips taking a 77-75 lead with with 49 second remaining on a three-pointer by Lori Krezeczowski.
Wilson then hit her three-pointer and CMU held on for the win.
Five Chippewas scored in twin figures, led by Casey Manning's 15 and 14 each for Chasidy Myers and Sharonda Hurd. Ann Skufca and Wilson added 11 for the winners.
Game-scoring honors went to Akron's Courtney Stewart with a career-high 23 followed by Jae Conn with 17 and Jessie Crooks 15.
After shooting 42.3 percent from the field in the first half, CMU hit 15-of-25 from the field in the final 20 minutes for 60 percent to finish the game at 50 percent on 28-of-56.
Akron shot 51.9 percent for the game on 28-of-54. The Zips were 13-of-24 from behind the three-point line.
CMU trailed by as many as 13 points in the second half at 46-33 before posting its biggest come-from-behind win of the season.
In addition to her 15 points, Manning chipped in with four steals and three assists.
CMU, 8-4 at home this season, plays at Eastern Michigan on Wednesday at 7 p.m. The Chippewas then play at Western Michigan on Saturday at 2 p.m.
