MOUNT PLEASANT - The Central Michigan University women's basketball team was unable to overcome a 15-0 run early in the second half by Eastern Michigan in a 60-48 loss on Saturday afternoon in Rose Arena.
The Chippewas fall to 8-12 overall, 2-7 in the Mid-American Conference while EMU improves to 16-4 overall, 6-3 in conference. CMU returns to action on Tuesday, Feb. 8, with a road game at Toledo. Tipoff for that game is 7 p.m.
After trailing 24-17 at the half, the Chippewas came out fast in the second-frame to pull within three, 27-24, at the 16:32 mark before EMU went on the deciding run to make the score 42-24 with just over 11 minutes remaining. During the run, the Eagles hit 6-of-8 shots from the floor including a pair of three while CMU went 0-for-6.
A major reason the Maroon and Gold trailed by seven at the break was 15 turnovers in the first half. They also shot just .316, but kept things close by holding EMU to just a .346 mark from the floor. In the second half, the Chippewas did commit just five turnovers, but EMU answered that by shooting .565 from the floor compared to just a .370 mark for CMU.
Recording team high honors in both points and rebounds for CMU was Sharonda Hurd. Hurd had 13 points on 5-of-10 shooting while pulling down a game-high eight boards. Hurd was the only Chippewa in double figures scoring with Casey Manning next at eight points. Manning did lead the team with four assists.
Game-high honors went to EMU's Ryan Coleman with 16 points. She also had seven rebounds, four assists and four steals, all team highs. The Eagle's Sarah VanMetre also hit double-digits in points with 12.
Both teams grabbed 31 rebounds with EMU winning the battle in steals, 9-6, assists, 12-6, and turnovers, 12-20. EMU outshot CMU from the floor, .449 compared to .348, while the Chippewas were better from beyond the arc, hitting .500 (5-of-10) to .375 (6-of-16), and better from the charity strip, .846 (11-of-13) to .625 (10-of-16).
