MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. — If the Central Michigan women's basketball team was supposed to show its inexperience in its first game of the season, that memo was not received.
The Chippewas throttled Indiana State, 85-65, Friday in the season opener at McGuirk Arena.
"I was just happy the fans got to see us play the way we did," said CMU coach Sue Guevara. " I know there was a big question mark with our fans on what kind of a team they were going to see with everything we lost (to graduation), but we have gained so much."
The Chippewas are now 7-2 in season openers under Guevara.
"I thought the pace of the game was exactly what we wanted, we were able to have six people in double figures, which is a very good thing, and I like the fact that we had 17 assists," Guevara said.
Guards Presley Hudson, Da'Jourie Turner, Cassie Breen and Jasmine Harris along with forwards Tinara Moore and Jewel Cotton all reached double digits in scoring.
Hudson, a freshman, looked right at home in her first collegiate game, scoring a team-high 21 points while dishing out five assists. Hudson was 3-for-9 from behind the 3-point arc. Her first came 8 seconds after the opening tip, and the Chippewas never trailed.
"I was excited, we have been working hard all summer and it was just great to just go out there and show people how hard we've been working," Hudson said.
"I think Pres is pretty special, she really is," Guevara said. "She makes it really hard for me to keep her off the floor."
Turner, CMU's lone returning starter, put up 15 points and dished out four assists in shared duties with Hudson at point guard. Breen had 11 points from the two-guard position.
"When I can start two point guards like I do, I think we are in really good shape," Guevara said. "I thought (Hudson) and (Turner) worked really well together."
The CMU interior looked tough throughout the game, totaling 31 defensive rebounds and 17 offensive rebounds. The Chippewas outrebounded the Sycamores, 48-30.
Freshman forward Reyna Frost led the Chippewa rebounders with eight.
Cotton had four rebounds to go along with a 10-point offensive showing in her first game back since her season-ending knee injury a year ago.
"I was nervous," Cotton said. "But being back out there I felt like I belonged and it was good."
Moore had 12 points and Harris added 10.
Joyea Marshall and Cierra Ceazer led Indiana State with 14 points apiece.
The Chippewas return to action on Sunday (3 p.m.) as they travel to Rochester for a matchup with Oakland University.
