CHICAGO — The Central Michigan women's basketball team suffered its first loss of the season Friday, falling to Illinois-Chicago, 66-63, in a non-conference game at UIC Pavilion.
Both team are 4-1. The Chippewas finished 1-1 on their Chicago trip. They defeated Loyola Chicago, 68-59, on Wednesday.
"Well the two teams that we've played this week were both bigger, very physical and aggressive type of teams," CMU coach Sue Guevara said. "I saw this week who I could depend on when the game is going to get physical.
"The best thing I can tell you is that I've got freshman that really welcome that type of physical play and are not going to back down from it."
Freshman guard Presley Hudson led the Chippewas with 16 points, while sophomore Cassie Breen added 14 points. The duo combined to make all seven of CMU's 3-pointers.
Freshman Reyna Frost provided a jolt off the bench for the Chippewas, scored 12 points and pulling down 17 rebounds for her first career double-double. It was a bounce-back effort for Frost, who went 0-for-7 from the floor in 18 minutes against Loyola on Wednesday.
"Considering the kind of game (Frost) had against Loyola, for her to come back and give us that type of effort and production today is very encouraging," Guevara said.
The Chippewas led the Flames throughout most of the game and held 11-point advantage late in the third quarter. CMU was outscored, 23-13, in the fourth quarter, failing to score on seven of its last eight possessions.
"Well in those seven empties, I think we had three turnovers which were critical at that juncture," said Guevara. "When you're playing a team like that you can't turn it over in a tight game like this was."
Jewel Cotton had seven rebounds for the Chippewas, who were out-rebounded 44-39.
Ruvana Campbell led the Flames with 21 points and 15 rebounds. Kendyl Nunn added 18 points
The Chippewas will return home for a Thursday, Dec. 3 non-conference matchup with Duquesne at 7 p.m. in McGuirk Arena.
