MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. - New year, same Chippewas.
The Central Michigan women's basketball team picked up its second Mid-American Conference win, 82-58, against Ohio on Wednesday in McGuirk Arena. It was CMU's first home league game of the season.
The Chippewas improved to 10-3, 2-0 MAC and look to keep the momentum going as they travel to Miami (Ohio) on Saturday (2 p.m.). The RedHawks are 9-4, 1-1 after an 86-61 loss to Ball State on Wednesday.
"We've challenged them and they've answered the challenge," CMU coach Sue Guevara said of her team. "This is a tough, tough league that we play in. Now we go on the road against Miami."
Central Michigan had four starters score in double figures against the Bobcats (7-6, 1-1). Tinara Moore (22 points) and Presley Hudson (20) combined for 42 points, while Cassie Breen and Reyna Frost scored 13 and 10 respectively.
CMU dominated the glass, 47-28, as Moore had 16 rebounds and Frost added 15. It was the seventh double-double of the season for Frost and the sixth for Moore.
"(Our scoring) makes it tough for the other team, because what are you going to give up?" Guevara said. "You can't take away everything. If you take away our inside game, we can shoot the three. If you take away the outside game, then we have the inside game.
"We have five people on the floor that can score. When all five are on the same cylinder, we're tough to beat."
Central Michigan, which is ranked ninth in the CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Top 25 poll, finished 30-of-61 (49.2 percent) from the field including 8-of-19 from 3-point range. The Chippewas also made 14 of their 15 free throw attempts (93.3 percent).
It was a big game for Moore, who went 5-for-7 from the floor and made all 11 of her charity tosses. The senior forward also tallied three blocks, giving her 163 in her career and moving her to second place in program history. She surpassed Ann Skufca (2003-07) who had 160.
"It's a good feeling," said Moore of her accomplishment.
Central Michigan got going against Ohio in the second quarter and continued to dominate. A jumper by Hudson just before the 2-minute mark of the first half sparked an 11-0 run that gave the Chippewas a 23-point halftime lead, 54-31. CMU led by as many as 30 points in the fourth quarter.
CMU finished with 15 offensive rebounds. Moore and Frost combined for 11 of them. The Chippewas scored 24 second-chance points, while Ohio finished with nine.
"That's extra possessions for us," Guevara said. "They're able to keep that ball alive. Looking at second chance points, we had 24. That's the pursuit of the ball. That's one thing that I'm very grateful that we have people that will work their tails off to go get the rebound."
Cierra Hooks scored 16 points for Ohio, while Amani Burke added 13.
