CMU, South Dakota State -- two mid-major powers -- battle on Monday night at McGuirk
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – It's mid-November, and already a big-time test.
The Central Michigan women's basketball team will entertain South Dakota State on Monday (7 p.m.) in a nonconference game at McGuirk Arena.
The game pits two of the nation's best mid-majors. The Chippewas, who reached the Sweet Sixteen of the NCAA Tournament last season, are ranked third in the CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Top 25. South Dakota State is ranked second.
GOOD OPENER
The Chippewas opened last week with a 104-61 victory over Oakland at home. CMU got a combined 70 points from its Big 3, returning starters Reyna Frost, Presley Hudson and Micaela Kelly. CMU made 15 of its 28 3-point attempts (53.6 percent) in the game.
The 15 triples ties for the third most in program history. The record is 17, which came on Jan. 11, 2017 against Ball State.
NEARING THE TOP
Hudson had five assists against the Grizzlies, bringing her career total to 460. The program's all-time leader is Suzy Merchant, who had 463 from 1988-91.
Hudson, a senior guard, also need just 16 points to move into third place on the Chippewa career scoring list. She has 1,661. Tinara Moore, the 2017-18 All-American and Mid-American Conference Player of the Year, has 1,676.
With her 10 rebounds against Oakland, Frost moved into second place on the Chippewas' career list with 1,097. She entered the season with 1,087, just two behind Julie Roberts (1978-81), who had 1,089. The career leader is Crystal Bradford, who had 1,140 from 2011-15.
THE JACKRABBITS
South Dakota State is 1-1 after an 80-62 home win over Florida Gulf Coast on Friday. FGC is ranked eighth in the Mid-Major poll. The Jackrabbits opened with a 91-52 loss to 19th-ranked Marquette.
Macy Miller, who averaged a team-high 18.3 points per game a year ago, scored 25 points in the Jackrabbits' win over FGC.

HOME FOR 4
The Chippewas' first four games are at home. They entertain Western Kentucky on Saturday, Nov. 17 and then welcome Central Florida on Wednesday, Nov. 21.
MORE TESTS
While South Dakota State poses a stiff test for the Chippewas, Western Kentucky and UCF are hardly pushovers.
The Hilltoppers are 0-2 heading into a home game with No. 13 Iowa on Tuesday. They opened with a 102-80 loss to fifth-ranked Louisville – which comes to Mount Pleasant on Dec. 20 – and dropped a 90-83 decision at Oklahoma on Friday. UCF opened the season with a 61-58 win at Pitt. The Knights finished 22-11 last season and earned a berth in the Women's NIT.
RANKINGS
In addition to their standing in the CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major poll, the Chippewas were ranked 24th in the ESPNW preseason poll. CMU was the lone mid-major school to appear in the poll. The Chippewas also received votes in both the Associated Press and the USA Today Coaches Poll.
