CMU entertains Miami (Ohio) in MAC game
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – The Central Michigan women's basketball team will look to remain unbeaten in the Mid-American Conference on Wednesday when it entertains Miami (Ohio).
The Chippewas are coming off back-to-back impressive road victories, the first over previously unbeaten Ohio and the second over Northern Illinois. Those teams ranked first and second, respectively, in the MAC in scoring.
CMU defeated the Bobcats by 18 points and downed the Huskies by 23.
STREAKING
The Chippewas have won four consecutive games, beginning with their 90-80 victory over then-No. 24 Miami (Fla.) on Dec. 30.
The Chippewas' three MAC victories have come by an average of 21.3 points per game.
THE NUMBERS
CMU senior guard Presley Hudson ranks 10th in the nation in scoring at 21.7 points per game, while fellow senior Reyna Frost is ninth with 12.1 rebounds per game. Frost, who recently became the career leading rebounder in the MAC, is averaging 18.1 points per game.
Frost has 13 double-doubles this season – she has notched a double-double in each of CMU's past nine games – and ranks fourth nationally.
CMU is averaging 80.4 points per game and ranks 21st nationally in that category. The Chippewas are third in the country in 3-point field goal percentage (41.6), ninth in field goal percentage (48.5) and 13th in free throw percentage (76.8).
RANKINGS
CMU has moved up to fourth in the CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Top 25 poll. CMU was fifth last week, while Ohio was third. The Bobcats have dropped to seventh. Buffalo is ranked ninth.
The Chippewas were fourth in last week's ESPNW Mid-Major poll, while Ohio was third. The new poll will be released on Wednesday.
The Chippewas are receiving votes in both the Associated Press and USA Today/Women's Basketball Coaches Association national polls.
CMU's RPI is 18, the highest among MAC teams. Buffalo (37) is second, followed by Ohio (51) and Kent State (71).
SCOUTING
The RedHawks are 10-4 overall, 1-2 MAC after a 66-59 home loss to Buffalo on Saturday. Kendall McCoy scored 20 points to lead Miami against the Bulls and she surpassed the 1,000-point mark for her career.
The RedHawks were picked to finish second behind Buffalo in the MAC East in the preseason poll.
Junior guard Lauren Dickerson leads a balanced Miami attack, averaging 14.1 points per game. McCoy, a 6-foot senior, is second at 13.1 per game.
The RedHawks feature the MAC's stingiest defense as they hold their opponents to 58.8 points per game.
REMEMBER WHEN
Miami gave the Chippewas all they could handle last season in a semifinal game of the MAC Tournament as CMU held off the inspired RedHawks, 61-58. Dickerson scored 21 points in that game.
BACK ON THE ROAD
After Wednesday's home game, the Chippewas hit the road for two straight, the first, on Saturday, Jan. 19 (5 p.m.) is at Kent State. The Golden Flashes and the Chippewas are the two remaining undefeated teams in MAC play.
MAC East-leading Kent State is 10-4, 3-0, and takes a seven-game win streak into its Wednesday game at Ohio.
The Chippewas are then scheduled to play at Toledo on Wednesday, Jan. 23. The Rockets are 9-5, 1-2 and play at Western Michigan on Wednesday night.
