MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – The Central Michigan women's basketball team makes its return to the friendly confines of McGuirk Arena on Thursday when it entertains Dayton in a nonconference game.
The game tips off at noon, a rare early start for a weekday game. It is the Chippewas'' Hoops for Hunger game.
Eyeing First Win
Thursday's game is the latest in a rugged nonconference slate leading up to the Mid-American Conference opener in early January.
CMU (0-3) has played mid-major power Green Bay, No. 9-ranked Louisville, and Western Kentucky, another traditionally strong mid-major program.
Green Bay is 10th in the CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Top 25. Future Chippewa opponents Marist (Nov. 30) and South Dakota State (Dec. 14) are also ranked in the mid-major poll. Marist is ninth, SDSU is 13th.
The Chippewas opened the season 12th in the poll and are now 26th, or the first team listed among others receiving votes.
Last Time Out
The Chippewas fell in a nonconference game at Western Kentucky, 93-58, on Sunday. The Hilltoppers (3-1) outscored CMU, 52-23, in the second half.
Leaders
Junior guard Micaela Kelly leads the Chippewas in scoring at 20 points per game. Junior Kyra Bussell is second on the squad in scoring at 17.0, while junior guard Maddy Watters is averaging 11.0 points per game.
Bussell is the Chippewas' top rebounder at 7.7 per game. Freshman point guard Molly Davis leads CMU in assists per game (4.6).
Scouting
The Flyers are 3-1 and coming off a 71-60 victory at Northeastern, which is CMU's next opponent (Wednesday, Nov. 27). Dayton's lone loss came to No. 6 South Carolina.
Dayton, which plays in the Atlantic 10 Conference, was 17-14 and finished 10-6 in its league last season, earning a berth in the WNIT. Dayton was picked to finish second in the A-10 preseason poll.
Seniors Shakeela Fowler and Jayla Scaife both average 11.8 points per game to lead the Flyers in scoring.
