CHICAGO – A tale of two halves.
DePaul outscored Central Michigan, 56-25, in the second half to overcome an 18-point halftime deficit and hand CMU an 88-75 nonconference men's basketball loss on Tuesday at the Blue Demons' Wintrust Arena.
CMU is 5-2, while DePaul improved to 7-0 for the first time since 1986-87.
How It Happened
CMU turned in a sensational first half, knocking down five of its 12 3-point attempts in seizing a 50-32 lead at the break.
But it was all DePaul in the second half as the Blue Demons outscored the Chippewas, 29-10 in the first eight-plus minutes of the half to surge ahead, 61-60.
The Chippewas went seven-plus scoreless minutes as the Blue Demons extended their lead to nine, 71-62, with under six minutes remaining. CMU never got closer than seven points the rest of the way.
"I thought for 20 minutes, it was about everything that we could ask for," CMU coach Keno Davis said. "Games are 40 minutes long, they're not 20. Are there some positives that we can take from this game? Of course. Doesn't mean that everybody's excited in the locker room afterwards, because we knew we had an opportunity today.
"In the first half we played like we had nothing to lose and we got after it and we worked as hard as we could, and we made some shots. We made some good effort plays. You get that lead and all of a sudden you start to be a little hesitant, not just offensively, but maybe defensively and rebounding and in the things that got us to that lead."
Leaders
Dallas Morgan hit six of his 11 3-point attempts to lead the Chippewas with 20 points, while Rob Montgomery added 17 points and nine rebounds.
Numbers
CMU shot 48.6 percent from the floor including 41.7 percent from 3-point range in the first half. Those numbers dipped to 25.8 percent and 16.7 percent in the second half.
While Morgan hit six 3-pointers, one shy of his career high, the rest of the Chippewas finished one for 13 from long range.
Top 10
CMU senior Kevin McKay registered two steals in the game, giving him 136 for his career. That makes him 10th in program history as he passed Dave Grauzer, who had 135 from 1976-79
Growing Pains
Davis: "When you're looking at a team that's trying to improve, trying to become a championship-caliber team, you've got to go through that learning process, the growing pains of knowing what not to do so that the next time you're in that situation, you respond and play differently. You have to be able to experience it to be able to get better."
