Chippewas hold off Penguin surge, improve to 6-2
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – Central Michigan used a pair of big runs, one to get the lead, and the other to slam the door, on Saturday in downing Youngstown State, 88-72, in a nonconference men's basketball game at McGuirk Arena.
It was a bounce-back win for CMU (6-2), which squandered an 18-point halftime lead in falling at DePaul on Tuesday.
How It Happened
The Chippewas used a 15-4 run in building a 48-32 halftime lead. The Chippewas were up 62-43 when Youngstown State surged, outscoring CMU, 16-3, to pull within six, 65-59, with just over seven minutes remaining.
Kevin McKay converted a three-point play to trigger a 10-0 CMU spurt that ended with a McKay dunk and the Chippewas back in control, 75-59, with 5:01 left.
"Against DePaul, that wasn't the outcome we wanted," McKay said. "We definitely took something away from that game. When (Youngstown State) started making their run, we stayed composed. We didn't fold, we came back at them with our own run."
Double-Double
McKay, a senior, finished with 24 points and 11 rebounds – both season highs – to lead the Chippewas with his 14th career double-double.
"At halftime, I didn't think I (had) played too well, I thought I was being too passive," McKay said. "(I wanted to) just come out and be a little bit more aggressive. There were a few times in the first half they weren't boxing out so I had to make advantage of that."
David DiLeo added 16 points for CMU, Devontae Lane had seven assists along with 14 points, and Rob Montgomery added 10 points and eight rebounds.
Moving Up
DiLeo made three 3-pointers in the game to give him 274 for his career. He moved past Braylon Rayson, who had 271 triples from 2013-17, and into second place on CMU's all-time 3-pointer list.
Josh Kozinski (2013-18) tops the chart with 306.
DiLeo also moved into 15th place on CMU's career scoring list with 1,259 points. He passed Chris Kaman, who scored 1,250 from 2001-03.
Making Improvements
Saturday's win was a good step for the Chippewas, particularly coming off the loss at DePaul.
"What we learned from this game to our last game was that when things went against us … we had a little calmer (response) and a little more composure," CMU coach Keno Davis said. "Really proud of our guys and how they were able to respond. I felt like the character of this team showed through in some key moments in the second half."
Next
CMU will return home on Friday, Dec. 6 (7 p.m.) to play UT Martin. On Sunday, Dec. 8 (2 p.m.), CMU will play at Valparaiso.
UT Marin is 3-4 and is coming off a 76-73 win over Boston University. Valpo is 5-3 and is coming off a 98-71 victory over Trinity Christian 98-71. The Crusaders are scheduled to play Eastern Michigan on Dec. 3.
