Chippewas roll past NIU as regular season homestretch looms
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. -- Remember that 3-point shooting slump? It's just that, a memory.
Central Michigan hit 11 3-pointers on Saturday, a career-high six coming from Reyna Frost, as the Chippewas downed Northern Illinois, 76-52, in a Mid-American Conference women's basketball game before 2,157 at McGuirk Arena.
Frost, a senior forward, added to her ever-growing legacy as she poured in a career-high 39 points and grabbed 13 rebounds for her ninth consecutive double-double, her 23rd of the season, and the 56th of her career.
Her 39 points is the third-highest total in a single game and her 16 field goals (on 27 attempts) ties for the most in the 51-year history of the program.
Guards Micaela Kelly, Presley Hudson and Maddy Watters combined for 21 of CMU's 25 assists, the Chippewas' third-highest total of the season.
"Our guards were really penetrating," Frost said. "They were doing a good job getting downhill and (the Huskies) were just leaving me open and basically, all of my 3's were wide open and I just knocked them down today. A lot of credit goes to (teammates) for getting to the basket and finding me."
Frost's previous career high in points, 33, came on Feb. 13 at Western Michigan; her previous career high for 3-pointers was four, which she set in the Chippewas' win at Miami (Fla.) on Dec. 30, 2018.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Chippewas never trailed and they bumped their lead to double digits for good, 28-16, on a Hudson 3-pointer less than two minutes into the second quarter.
CMU led by 16, 40-24, at halftime and their lead peaked at 28 points late in the third quarter.
LEADERS
Hudson scored 17 points, all of which came in the first half. Kelly added 12 points, nine rebounds and nine assists.
Hudson scored 14 points in the first quarter, making six of her 6 of her 8 field goal attempts in the stanza.
SHOOTING STARS
The Chippewas made 11 of their 30 3-point attempts. Frost led the long-range charge, making 6 of her 11 tries.
The Chippewas have made at least 11 triples in each of their last three games after not reaching double digits from beyond the arc in nine consecutive starts.
"I think the biggest adjustment comes right here," CMU coach Sue Guevara said, pointing at her head. "The same shots that are going in for us now are the same ones that weren't (going) before. We kept shooting the 3 and we kept shooting the 3 in practice.
"As simple as it may seem, it's a mindset and I think I want to give our team so much credit today. We're not sleeping on anybody and we set some very specific goals in each game. We did today and our players are accomplishing those goals."
WHERE THEY STAND
In improving to 11-3 in the MAC, the Chippewas are within one win of clinching a tie for their fourth consecutive MAC West title. They go to Ball State on Wednesday, Feb. 27. NIU, which is 16-10 overall, is 8-6 and in second place in the West.
CMU trails Miami (Ohio) by one game for the best record in the MAC. The RedHawks improved to 12-2 in conference play with a 75-62 victory over Bowling Green on Saturday.
"I think every game is important," Frost said. "Obviously, you can't sleep on anybody in the MAC. You just focus on yourself and you get better because obviously the MAC Tournament is coming, but we still have a couple more games to finish it out and every team wants to give us their best game so we have to keep playing hard and getting better."
Saturday's win was CMU's fourth consecutive and its eighth in its last nine starts. The Chippewas are 19-6 overall.
DEFENSE
CMU held NIU's Mikayla Voigt to seven points on 2-of-13 shooting. Voigt entered the game averaging 19.3 points per game, ranking fourth in the MAC in that category.
"I thought we did a good job chasing her and I thought we did a really good job of containing her and then keeping her off of the glass," Guevara said. "You see us defensively starting to get better as we come into March. You're supposed to be playing your best basketball in March."
Gabby Nikitinaite scored 18 points to lead the Huskies, who made just 29.4 percent of their field goal attempts.
