Hudson becomes CMU's all-time basketball scoring leader
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – It had the makings of a storybook comeback.
In the end, though, Central Michigan could not close the deal in falling to Ohio, 78-75, on Saturday in a showdown of Mid-American Conference women's basketball division leaders before 2,152 at McGuirk Arena.
The loss left West-leading CMU 16-6, 7-3 MAC. The East-leading Bobcats are 20-2 and have the league's best record at 9-2. The Chippewas defeated the Bobcats, 88-70, a month ago in Athens, Ohio.
HOW IT HAPPENED
CMU trailed by as many as 19 points in the third quarter before rallying to within two points twice midway through the fourth quarter.
But the Chippewas simply could not get over the hump.
"They came in here and took it to us really quick," said CMU coach Sue Guevara, whose team never led and was down, 45-34, at halftime. "You can't win a game in the first half, but you can certainly lose it. They came in a lot hungrier than we did early.
"We lost by three (points), and we were 14 for 24 from the free throw line. That's where we lost the game."
CMU pulled to within two, 69-67, with 4:49 to play and was within three, 76-73, with 19 seconds left. Dominique Doseck hit two free throws with 16 seconds to play to up Ohio's lead to 78-73.
The Chippewas missed two 3-point tries as the clock ticked down to under a second to play. Micaela Kelly made two free throws for the final margin.
"Came back hard, just could not get the ball to go in the hole," Guevara said. "And then down the stretch we turned it over twice. Against a team like that it's going to be tough."
LEADERS
Presley Hudson scored 28 points, Reyna Frost added 18, and Kelly finished with 11 to lead CMU.
Cierra Hooks scored 28 points on 12-of-23 shooting to lead the Bobcats, who had five players score in double figures.
MILESTONE FOR HUDSON
Hudson drilled a foul-line jumper with 8:50 to play in the second quarter, giving her 2,072 points for her career as she became the all-time leading scorer in CMU basketball history. She passed Melvin "Sugar" McLaughlin, who scored 2,071 from 1980-83.
Hudson's 28 marked her second-highest total of the season, and she now has 2,093 for her career.
"Right now it's kind of hard to celebrate it because it's a loss," said Hudson, a senior guard from Wayland. "I hate losing. It's a good accomplishment, but it's kind of hard to think about right now. It's not fun to lose."
Said Guevara, who was seated next to Hudson during the postgame press conference: "That's a big, fat deal. Unfortunately it gets overshadowed because we lost the game. She has a lot of games left this season, and that's going to be really hard to break. So Pres, congratulations."
3-POINT STRUGGLES
Hudson hit four of the Chippewas' five 3-pointers (on 22 attempts). They finished at 22.7 percent from long range after making a season-low three triples on Wednesday in a victory over Ball State.
The 3-pointer has long been a calling card for the Chippewas, who entered the game averaging 37.5 percent from long range and were 26thin the nation with 8.6 triples per game.
"If the 3 ball's not going right now, I just know that puppy's going to go in March," Guevara said. "We've got a long way before that. As much as we shoot it, it's going to go. It's going to go. We put too much time, too much work into it, that it's not going to go."
ANOTHER DOUBLE-DOUBLE
Frost, a senior forward from Reese, led the Chippewas with 10 rebounds for her 19thdouble-double of the season. She entered Saturday's game tied for fourth in the nation in that category.
THE NUMBERS
Both teams finished with 42 rebounds, a rarity for a game involving the Chippewas. It marked just the third time this season that CMU has not outrebound an opponent. From the line, the Chippewas suffered their second-worst game of the season, percentage wise.
"We didn't box out and we got outhustled for some rebounds," Guevara said. "We lost the game today at the free throw line and on the boards, that's where we lost it."
