CMU women go to Eastern Michigan on Saturday
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – A win means a division title and another steppingstone to bigger, better and more for the Central Michigan women's basketball team.
The Chippewas go to Eastern Michigan on Saturday (2 p.m.) needing a win to wrap up their fourth consecutive Mid-American Conference West Division championship. CMU is also seeking its third straight overall MAC regular-season title and a repeat MAC Tournament crown.
But first things first.
The Chippewas are 12-3 in MAC play – 21-6 overall – and hold a three-game lead over both Northern Illinois and Toledo, who are tied for second in the West.
DOWN THE STRETCH THEY COME
After Saturday's game, the Chippewas will close the regular season at home. They play host to Western Michigan on Wednesday, March 6 (7 p.m.), and then entertain Toledo on Saturday March 9 (1 p.m.).
TITLE CHASE
The Chippewas are tied for first overall in the MAC with Miami (Ohio). Both teams are 12-3 in league play. The overall league champion earns the first seed in the MAC Tournament, which begins on Monday, March 11.
The RedHawks, who play at Buffalo on Saturday, close the regular season with home games against Ohio and Akron next week. Miami holds the tie-breaker, head-to-head result, over the Chippewas. The RedHawks downed CMU, 70-67, in Mount Pleasant on Jan. 16.
THE CHIPPEWAS
The remarkable careers of seniors Reyna Frost and Presley Hudson are winding down, and both have done nothing but bolster their respective legacies throughout the 2018-19 season.
Frost further strengthened her case for the MAC Player of the Year Award on Wednesday in CMU's 81-64 victory at Ball State. The 6-foot forward from Reese posted her 10th consecutive double-double, her 24th of the season, and the 57th of her career.
Hudson added 18 points and six assists.
Frost ranks second in the MAC in scoring at 21.4 points per game, while Hudson is third (20.8). Frost leads the league – and ranks second in the nation -- in rebounding (13.5 per), while Hudson leads the MAC with 5.9 assists per. Hudson's assist total is 16th nationally.
SCOUTING
Eastern Michigan is 12-14, 5-10 and has lost its last two games, both on the road, the first at Western Michigan, 71-68; and the second at Northern Illinois, 70-60. The Chippewas defeated the Eagles, 70-60, on Jan. 26 in Mount Pleasant.
Danielle Minott leads the Eagles in both scoring (13.7) and rebounding (5.6).
