CMU and Buffalo renew rivalry Friday (11 a.m.) in tournament semifinal
CLEVELAND, Ohio – And now, Buffalo.
The Central Michigan women's basketball team will take on the Bulls on Friday (11 a.m.) in a Mid-American Conference Tournament semifinal game at Quicken Loans Arena. The Chippewas (25-6) are the defending tournament champions, the league regular-season champions, and the No. 1 seed; Buffalo (21-9) is seeded fourth.
CMU won both regular-season meetings with the Bulls, 76-65, in Mount Pleasant, and 100-95 in Buffalo.
"We had two really good games with Buffalo and I expect we're going to have the same thing (on Friday)," CMU coach Sue Guevara said. "It's going to be a battle, it's going to be a war."
Friday's other semifinal features No. 2-seeded Ohio and third-seeded Miami (Ohio). The title game is Saturday (11 a.m.).
Friday's game will be yet another matchup of the MAC's premier players in CMU's Reyna Frost, the MAC Player of the Year, and Buffalo's Cierra Dillard, the league scoring champion who finished runner-up in the player-of-the-year voting to Frost.
While Buffalo rolled past Kent State, 85-52, on Wednesday in a quarterfinal, the Chippewas got all they wanted and more from Eastern Michigan before pulling out an 88-80 overtime win. Presley Hudson beat the regulation buzzer with a dramatic 3-pointer – one of ESPN's top-10 plays of the day – to send the game to the extra session.
Frost and Hudson combined to score all 15 of CMU's points in overtime.
"I think the first game (of the tournament) is always the toughest one," Guevara said. "It really is. I was just really glad that we were able to persevere. We knew we were going to get an excellent game out of Eastern Michigan. We always do. Survive and advance."
Hudson and Frost both scored 28 points in that win over Eastern, while Dillard had 22 in Buffalo's win over Kent State.
The Chippewas and Bulls have a history in Cleveland. CMU defeated the Bulls, 96-91, last season in the tournament championship game before both went on to the Sweet Sixteen of the NCAA Tournament.
In 2016, Buffalo topped the Chippewas in overtime in the title game.
