Chippewas score 3 in ninth to take the opener
KENT, Ohio. -- The Central Michigan baseball team split a Mid-American Conference doubleheader with Kent State on Saturday at the Golden Flashes' Schoonover Stadium.
Â
The Chippewas broke a 4-4 tie with three runs in the ninth inning in winning the opener, 7-4. Kent State jumped to a 6-0 lead after two innings in taking the nightcap, 12-4.
Â
CMU, which entered the weekend tied for first place in the MAC, is now in third place at 8-4 in league play after dropping two of three to the Golden Flashes. The Chippewas are 25-10 overall.
Â
Kent State is 15-18, 5-5.
"To me, this series needs to show us that we need to be consistently committed to the things we value," CMU coach Jordan Bischel said. "We are very good when we do, and very average when we don't. I am extremely excited to get to practice on Monday so we can have a great week of preparation."
Â
The Chippewas play host to Cornerstone in a nonconference game on Tuesday (4 p.m.) and then go to Toledo next weekend for a three-game MAC series.
Â
GAME ONE
With the game tied 4-4 entering the ninth inning, Jacob Crum was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to put CMU on top, 5-4.
Â
An RBI groundout by Jason Sullivan upped CMU's lead to 6-4, and then Griffin Lockwood-Powell scored on a passed ball to make it 7-4.
Â
Zach Kohn (3-3) pitched three perfect innings in relief of starter Cameron Brown for the victory. Kohn, a junior right-hander, struck out four. He has allowed just one run in his last five appearances.
Â
"Zach Kohn was outstanding today," Bischel said. "He has really worked hard the past several months, and while it took some time, it is really starting to pay off. He pitched extremely effectively with all of his pitches and had great life on the ball."
Â
The Chippewas finished with seven hits, including triples from Zach Gilles and Lockwood-Powell, and a double by Crum. Crum finished with two RBI.
Â
GAME TWO
The Golden Flashes hit back-to-back home runs off Chippewa starter Tyler Hankins to take a 4-0 lead with one out in the first, ending the 6-foot-9 left hander's day just six batters into the game.
Â
Kent State added an unearned run in the inning to take a 5-0 lead, and got another unearned run in the second to increase its lead to 6-0.
Â
The Chippewas got a two-run homer from Crum and an RBI double from Gaoshua Williams in the third, cutting their deficit to 6-3, but that's as close as CMU would get.
Â
Hankins (4-2) took the loss.
Â
"Tyler's success is dependent on commanding the bottom of the strike zone," Bischel said. "When he does that, he is extremely good. When he struggles in that area, he is very vulnerable. Today he struggled with it and Kent did a great job taking advantage."
Â
Jordan Patty allowed three runs (one earned) in 3 2/3 innings of relief for CMU. Ryan Palmblad, Cameron Miller and Ian Leatherman also pitched in relief for the Chippewas.
Â
Sullivan had three hits including two doubles to lead CMU at the plate.
