Lockwood-Powell hits MAC-leading 10th homer
The Chippewas improved to 35-12, matching their highest win total since 2010. They entertain Concordia in another nonleaguer on Wednesday (4:30 p.m.) and then go to Eastern Michigan this weekend for a MAC series.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Lockwood-Powell's homer, a two-run shot, came during a three-run third inning. The Chippewas never trailed, and added to their lead with multiple runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings.
AT THE PLATE
The Chippewas collected 10 hits and took advantage of 10 walks issued by Oakland pitching. It marked the fifth time in their last seven games that the Chippewas have reached double digits in hits.
"The last two weeks, we've had really good at-bats, and that continued today," CMU coach Jordan Bischel said. "Oakland had a few injuries, so they struggled a little bit. But we stayed disciplined, made them earn their outs, and we were able to piece together some runs for us."
Jason Sullivan had two hits and Blake Cleveland blasted a three-run double for the Chippewas. Zach Gilles also doubled.
ON THE MOUND
Bischel used six pitchers in the game. They combined to strike out 10, allow five hits, and walk six.
Starter Jack Collins went 2 2/3 innings. Logan Buczkowski, Tyler Hankins, Cameron Miller, Garrett Willis and Zach Kohn also pitched for CMU. Buczkowski (3-0) was credited with the victory.
"Today was an important day for our pitching staff," Bischel said. "We've pitched really well on the weekends over the past two weeks, and when that happens, you don't get a lot of relievers in the game. Our starters have been going deep (into games), and we pitched a lot of guys today that needed a little bit of work. They did a pretty good job today. Oakland is a pretty good offensive team, and we pitched well from start to finish."
CLIMBING THE LADDER
The 35 wins match the 2014 and 2015 Chippewas for the highest victory totals since the 2010 squad won 36 games.
In guiding the Chippewas to 35 victories, Bischel ties Dave Keilitz for the second-most victories for a first-year coach in program history.
The legendary Keilitz guided his first CMU team, in 1971, to a 35-7-1 finish. The program record for victories under a first-year coach came in 1985, when Dean Kreiner led CMU to 37 victories in his first season after succeeding Keilitz.
