Two-run 9th inning lifts CMU to dramatic victory
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. -- A Wednesday walk-off, and an eighth-consecutive victory.
Â
Central Michigan scored twice in the bottom of the ninth inning on Wednesday to take a 3-2 nonconference victory from Concordia at Keilitz Field at Theunissen Stadium.
Â
The win was CMU's eighth in a row as it improved to 36-12, matching the 2010 team for the most victories in a single season since the 2005 Chippewas won 42.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
Down 2-1 in the bottom of the ninth inning, CMU got singles from Jason Sullivan and Zach Heeke, who left for pinch runner Ty Rollin. With Sullivan on third and Rollin on first, the pair executed a double steal with Sullivan scoring to tie the game 2-2 and Rollin taking second.
Â
David Cole then singled to bring Rollin home with the winning run.
Â
"We ran the bases, actually, pretty poorly today, but we had a great base-running play in the ninth when we really needed one," Bischel said.
Â
ON THE MOUND
CMU starter Ian Leatherman, a freshman, allowed two runs on three hits and struck out a career-high eight over five innings. Garrett Navarra and Ryan Palmblad pitched in relief. Palmblad (2-0) picked up the victory.
Â
"I think it's always important to go out there and show what you can do," said Leatherman, the younger brother of staff stalwart Pat Leatherman, a senior who recently became the program's career leader in strikeouts. "I've had stretches where I've shown what I can do, and I've had stretches where I've struggled a little bit. To have that outing to show that this is what I'm capable of (was important)."
Â
"We have good leaders behind me. It makes it easier to have an older brother to mentor me through everything."
Â
Ian Leatherman "has had a little bit of an up and down freshman year, which is what freshman years are about," Bischel said. "Today he showed how prepared he was over the past several months, even if he wasn't in a lot of games. He threw the ball great today. That's a credit to all the time he's put in when no one was looking, and it was great to see it pay off for us today."
Â
AT THE PLATE
Zach Gilles led CMU with two hits. Kratt drove in a run.
Â
NEXT
CMU goes to Eastern Michigan to play a three-game Mid-American Conference series this weekend. The Chippewas, who lead the MAC at 16-5, and Eagles open on Friday (6 p.m.). The Eagles are 11-37-1, 6-15 MAC.
