CMU closes season-opening weekend on Sunday against Purdue
CLERMONT, Fla. – The Central Michigan softball team continued its season-opening weekend with a pair of losses on Saturday at Legends Way Stadium.
The Chippewas fell to UConn, 9-3, and then to Stetson, 8-1.
CMU, which fell to the same two teams on Friday in their first two games of the season, found itself in an early deficits in both games on Saturday.
The Huskies (7-2) scored five runs in the first inning and added two in the second for a 7-0 lead, and then the Hatters (5-4) built a 5-1 lead over CMU after two innings.
"We're giving up too many runs with two outs right now and I really want to see us improve on that," first-year CMU coach McCall Salmon said. "We came out and competed and it was nice to string some hits together, push some runs across the plate. Definitely better; we improved from (Friday)."
The Chippewas totaled 12 hits on the day, seven against UConn and five against Stetson.
CMU (0-4) is scheduled to wrap up its season-opening weekend in Clermont on Sunday (11 a.m.) against Purdue.
Vs. UConn
The Chippewas scored their first run of the season on a Tala Dean RBI double in the fourth inning. They got two more in the seventh on Morgan Gardner's run-scoring single and a Shannon Stein RBI double.
Stein and Dean each doubled and singled and Shaidan Knapp doubled.
Cloe Mallory started for CMU and allowed five runs on three hits in two-thirds of an inning in taking the loss.
Stein pitched the remaining 6 1/3 innings, surrendering four runs on 10 hits, while walking five and striking out two.
"Any time our pitchers get in-game experience they're only going to get better," Salmon said. "Stein did a good job in that spot, coming in and throwing strikes and giving us the opportunity to make plays."
Winning pitcher Katie Koshes struck out four and walked five.
Vs. Stetson
The Chippewas scored their lone run in the top of the first when Morgan Gardner was hit by a pitch, took second on a wild pitch, and scored on an error.
Dean had two of the Chippewas' five hits.
Sophomore Kaitlyn Bean allowed seven hits, struck out five, and walked three in going the distance for CMU.
Stetson pitcher Chloe Temples struck out five.
