MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – The Central Michigan women's basketball team will look to break a two-game losing streak on Wednesday (5 p.m.) when it entertains Eastern Michigan in a Mid-American Conference game at McGuirk Arena.
The Chippewas are 7-4, 5-2 MAC, tied for third place with Bowling Green. A week ago, CMU had a share of first place before losing games at Northern Illinois and then at home to Ohio. Eastern Michigan is 7-5, 4-3.
Last Time Out
The Chippewas trailed by as many as 18 points and then rallied to within five, 89-84, with 30 seconds to play before succumbing to the Bobcats, 93-84, on Saturday at home.
Kelly on a Tear
CMU senior guard Mikaela Kelly has lived up to the hype as one of the best players in college basketball.
The reigning MAC Player of the Year scored 36 points – just two shy of her career high – in Saturday's loss to Ohio. It was her second-consecutive 30-point game, her third of the season, and the sixth of her career.
Her 36-point effort against Ohio gave her 1,799 career points and moved her into fourth place on the program's all-time scoring list. She surpassed her former teammate Reyna Frost, who scored 1,794 points from 2015-19.
Kelly ranks second in the MAC and seventh in the nation in scoring at 24.5 points per game. She is making 48.7 percent of her field goal attempts, ranking fourth in the league in that category. She leads the MAC in 3-pointers attempted (93) and made (36).
Where They Stand
While Kelly is among the best in the MAC, and the nation, in several statistical categories, she has company from her teammates.
Senior guard Maddy Watters leads the MAC and ranks 18th nationally in 3-point field goal percentage (.484) and sophomore guard Molly Davis leads the MAC in free throw percentage (.919) and is third in assists with 4.6 per game. Davis is averaging 17.5 points per game, ranking 11th in the league and among the top 100 in the nation.
As a team, CMU leads the MAC in nine statistical categories, including field goal percentage (.448), free throw percentage (.801) and 3-pointers per game (11.1), and they are committing a league-low 13.8 turnovers per game.
Scouting
After a 1-3 start in the MAC, the Eagles have won their last three games, capped by a 64-46 victory over Akron on Saturday. It was Eastern's first home win. The Eagles are 5-1 in road games this season.
Eastern is allowing just 60.1 points per game, which makes it the MAC's stingiest defense. CMU ranks second in the conference in scoring at 77.9 points per game.
Senior guard Areanna Combs leads the Eagles in scoring at 19.8 points per game. She scored 19 points and grabbed nine rebounds on Saturday in Eastern's win over Akron.
The second-leading scorer is Ce'Nara Skanes, a 6-foot sophomore. She had a double-double (21 points, 10 rebounds) against Akron and is averaging 17.0 points per game. Junior guard Jenna Annecchiarico also had a double-double (14 points, 10 rebounds) against the Zips.
