
CMU Athletics Weekly Preview

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – The Central Michigan wrestling and men's basketball teams are set to make their first home appearances of the season, and the CMU track & field team kicks off the indoor season this weekend.
• The Chippewa wrestlers are scheduled to entertain Ryder on Friday (7 p.m.) at McGuirk Arena in a Mid-American Conference dual.
It will be the third competition of the season for the Chippewas, who have competed in the Michigan State Open and the Journeymen Classic.
Ryder is 1-1 in duals after opening the season with a 33-3 loss to Purdue and then a 20-14 win over Northern Illinois in its first MAC dual. The Broncs have also competed in the Keystone Classic, placing fourth in the eight-team event.
CMU placed second and Rider was third last season at the MAC Championships, and the Chippewas took a 28-10 victory from the Broncs in a dual last season at Rider in Lawrenceville, N.J.
Friday's dual is CMU's lone home appearance until Jan. 16, when it hosts Cal State Bakersfield, American and Campbell in the Chippewa Challenge.
• The CMU track & field team is scheduled to compete on Friday (1 p.m.) at the Grand Valley State Holiday Open at the Lakers' Kelly Family Sports Center.
• The Chippewa men's basketball team is slated to play its home opener on Sunday (2 p.m.) when it welcomes Western Illinois for a nonconference game.
CMU is 1-6 after a brutally tough early nonconference schedule which included then-No. 1 Gonzaga, No. 9 Kentucky, and DePaul and Xavier. The Chippewas will also play UIC at home and travel to Youngstown State and Detroit Mercy before their MAC opener on Dec. 29 at Kent State.
Western Illinois is 6-2 with victories over Nebraska, Miami (Ohio) and Ball State along with close losses to DePaul and Eastern Michigan on its resumé. The Chippewas are slated to go to Youngstown State (2-3) on Dec. 8 (7 p.m.).
• The Chippewa women's basketball team is set to entertain Oakland on Tuesday, Dec. 7 (11 a.m.) at McGuirk Arena. It is the program's annual Hoops for Hunger Game; fans are encouraged to bring nonperishable donations.
CMU is 2-4 after going 1-2 during a three-game road trip that concluded on Wednesday with a 59-54 loss at Cincinnati. The Chippewas opened the trip with a 63-57 loss to Northeastern and then defeated Marist, 56-50.
The Chippewa women are scheduled to entertain Loyola-Chicago on Saturday, Dec. 11 and then go to Green Bay on Dec. 20 for their final nonconference game. They are slated to open MAC play on Dec. 29 at Buffalo.
• CMU Gymnastics is holding the Maroon and Gold Showcase on Saturday, Dec. 4, at 2 p.m. in McGuirk Arena.
