12/20/2021 11:38:00 PM | Women's Basketball
GREEN BAY, Wis. – Molly Davis caught fire in the second half and Central Michigan eventually caught Green Bay.
But in the end, the Phoenix got the big bucket and hit six consecutive free throws down the stretch in handing CMU a 71-67 nonconference women's basketball loss at Green Bay's Kress Events Center.
The Chippewas (2-7) begin Mid-American Conference play at Buffalo on Wednesday, Dec. 29 (1 p.m.). The Bulls are 6-4 after an 80-69 loss at Bucknell on Monday.
Davis, a junior, scored 26 of her game-high 27 points in the second half. Her 3-pointer with 4:40 to play tied the game, 61-61, after the Chippewas had trailed by as many as 16 points in the first half.
Davis made five 3-pointers on 14 attempts, giving her 153 career triples and moving her into ninth place in CMU history.
After Davis' game-tying 3, Meghan Pingel scored inside with 3:49 remaining to put the Phoenix back on top, 63-61.
Green Bay (6-4) never trailed again as it made six consecutive free throws though the Chippewas got timely triples by Davis and Kalle Martinez to keep it a one-possession game.
Martinez, a senior guard, finished with 13 points and hit three 3-pointers. Both numbers were career bests.
Anika Weekes led the Chippewas with nine rebounds and Jahari Smith had eight.
