Chippewa Gymnasts Prep For Home Opener

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – The Central Michigan gymnastics team is set to make its 2021 home debut on Thursday (2 p.m.) when it entertains Northern Illinois in a Mid-American Conference dual at McGuirk Arena.
It is the third meet of the season for the Chippewas, who posted a season-best 195.050 team score in a victory at Bowling Green last weekend.
Last Time Out
A Chippewa won all four events at Bowling Green and CMU set season-high scores on bars (48.950) and on balance beam (48.425). The Chippewas' 48.800 vault score was just shy of their season best.
CMU junior Morgan Tong won the beam with career-high-tying 9.900, freshman Katie Kowalski won the vault (9.850), junior Sierra DeMarinis captured the floor exercise (9.850), and sophomore Hannah DeMers won the uneven parallel bars (9.925).
DeMers, who also placed second on vault (9.825), was named the MAC Specialist of the Week on Tuesday for her performance at Bowling Green. Her 9.925 on bars ranks as the top score by a MAC gymnast in that event in 2021.

The Chippewas are averaging a 193.833 team score, while Northern Illinois is averaging 193.500.
CMU has a MAC-best 48.775 average on vault. Northern Illinois' highest-event ranking among MAC teams is in balance beam (fourth).
Individuals
DeMers tops the league in both vault and on bars, averaging 9.833 in both events. DeMarinis and DeMers rank sixth and seventh, respectively, on floor exercise in the conference.
Tong's 9.900 on beam at Bowling Green ties for the second-best score in that event by a MAC gymnast this season. Kowalski and DeMers both have posted 9.850 on vault this season and are tied for the second-highest score among conference gymnasts.
Nationally, DeMers' average scores rank her 12th on bars, 47th on vault, and 95th on floor. DeMarinis is 77th on floor.
The Huskies
NIU is 2-2 overall, 2-0 MAC. The Huskies last competed on Jan. 31 when they topped Bowling Green in a home dual. Their season high is 194.250, which came in a dual at Western Michigan on Jan. 24.
NIU sophomore Natalie Hamp is third in the MAC on bars, while senior Zoie Schroeder is fourth on beam, and junior Tara Kofmehl is eighth on vault.
