'Big Meet' Next For Chippewa Track & Field
2/11/2021 2:24:00 PM | Track & Field
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – The Central Michigan track & field team will get its last taste of competition before the Mid-American Conference Championships when it goes to the Grand Valley State Big Meet on Friday at the Lakers' Kelly Family Sports Center.
The meet will take place in two sessions, morning and afternoon. The morning session is comprised entirely of 5,000-meter races, three sections for women, five for men. Though CMU does not have a men's track & field program, the Chippewas will enter a number of runners – members of the CMU cross country program – in the men's 5,000.
The afternoon session begins at 3:30 p.m. with the women's weight throw and the 60-meter hurdle preliminaries.
Field events to be contested are the long jump, high jump, triple jump and pole vault in addition to the weight throw. Running events are the 60-, 200-, and 400-meter dashes, the 800-meter run, the mile run, the 3,000-meter run, and the 1,600-meter relay.
The Chippewa women won six events last Saturday at their annual Jack Skoog Invitational, highlighted by Quiara Wheeler's performance in the weight throw.
Wheeler, a senior from Flint, broke her own program record for the second time in three meets this season, tossing the weight 21.51 meters. Wheeler's throw is the sixth longest among NCAA women this season and she is a three-time winner of the Mid-American Conference Female Field Athlete of the Week Award.
Wheeler leads a strong group of Chippewa throwers who rank second in the nation behind Ole Miss in the event. The Rebels average 20.84 meters over four throwers, while the Chippewas – including Marissa Dunn, Maya Bennett and Mohogany Wells – average 19.33 meters.
CMU will next be in action when they stay home at the Jack Skoog Track for the MAC Championships Feb. 27-28.
