KENT, Ohio – Down to the wire. About like it is likely to go in the Mid-American Conference Championships.
The Central Michigan gymnastics team had a solid-to-very-good day on Sunday but succumbed to Kent State in a MAC dual at the Golden Flashes' M.A.C. Center.
The Chippewas posted a 195.950 team score, their second best of the season. Kent State finished with a season-high 196.375. Kent State's score surpassed the 196.300 that CMU posted a week ago as the best of the season for a MAC team.
CMU is 2-3 both overall and in the MAC; Kent State is 4-5, 3-2. The Chippewas have three more meets ahead of the March 20 MAC Championships in Kalamazoo, Mich.
"It's going to be a very competitive conference championship (meet)," CMU coach Christine MacDonald said. "It was a great environment (on Sunday); both teams did well, and both teams continue to improve every week.
"Both teams were resting some athletes today. When we get to full strength I'm really excited about the next couple of weeks here and continue to build off of each weekend. Our athletes continue to mature and grow and find that competitive flow, which is what we've been talking about. Lineups are starting to settle in. We're excited to continue to build depth in all of the events. We're progressing."
The Chippewas' 195.950 is a strong score by any measure and will help bump their average as they eye a spot in the NCAA Regionals. It also flushes out 192.375 they posted in their season-opening dual.
"It definitely is a good road score and we needed that," MacDonald said. "A great team effort today and we really earned the scores today."
CMU's Katie Kowalski won the vault (9.875) and Hannah DeMers tied for first on the balance beam (9.875).
Also for the Chippewas, Sierra DeMarinis and DeMers tied for second on vault (9.850), Audrianna Hammond and DeMers tied for second on bars (9.850), Morgan Tong (9.825) tied for fourth on beam, and Taylor Pitchell and DeMarinis tied for second on floor (9.875).
DeMarinis (39.125) won the all-around.
"Ashley Veglucci stepped in on bars (tying for fourth)," MacDonald said. "She's been doing exhibition for us and she filled a spot for us today and did a great job anchoring the event."
Tong was once again solid on beam as were DeMarinis and Pitchell on floor, MacDonald said.
Vault continues to be a strength for the Chippewas.
"It's been a great event for us," MacDonald said. "They really sold their finishes and their landings. Katie Kowalski, I think it's the fourth straight meet that she's won the event. She puts the work in and she continues to perform week in and week out."
