CMU slated to take on VCU, William & Mary, Richmond
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – The Central Michigan baseball team hits the road this weekend for four games in Virginia.
The Chippewas are scheduled to play VCU in Richmond on Saturday (2 p.m.) and then goes to Williamsburg on Sunday (noon) for a doubleheader with William & Mary. CMU completes the weekend with a return to Richmond on Monday (1 p.m.) to play Richmond.
The Chippewas were scheduled to play four games at Bellarmine in Louisville, Ky. last week. That series was cancelled because of weather.
Last Time Out
The Chippewas opened the season two weeks ago by dropping three games at Texas A&M – Corpus Christi. CMU dropped both ends of its season-opening doubleheader, 4-3 and 5-1; and then lost the finale, 6-3. It marked the first time in 2021 that the Chippewas have been outdoors and on a diamond.
The most glaring number coming out of the opening weekend for CMU was 33 – the number of baserunners the Chippewas stranded in the series. Left on base can be a glass-half-full proposition: True, the Chippewas could have used a few more big hits; but that they were able to put so many on base to begin with is a good sign.
"We were able to get a lot of guys on base and create some opportunities," CMU coach Jordan Bischel said after the series. "We know what we have to work on and we have to get back it."
The Rotation
Junior Jordan Patty is scheduled to start on Saturday for the Chippewas. Redshirt freshman Andrew Taylor is set to start the opener of Sunday's doubleheader, while senior Cameron Brown is slated to start the nightcap. Senior J.T. Rogoszewski is set to start against the Spiders on Monday.
Patty, Taylor and Rogoszewski started the Chippewas' three games in Texas two weeks ago.
At the Plate
The Chippewas hit just .165 in their season-opening series in Corpus Christi, a number that isn't surprising considering that it marked the first time CMU has seen live pitching this season.
CMU had 15 hits in the series, just two of them for extra bases.
Sophomore Garrett Navarra led CMU in Texas with four hits and is hitting .500.
Scouting
VCU heads into the weekend 2-5, William & Mary is 0-3, and Richmond is 4-0.
Next
The Chippewas are scheduled to play a three-game series at 14th-ranked West Virginia March 11-13.
