YPSILANTI, Mich. – Hannah DeMers won all four events and the all around on Friday to lead the Central Michigan gymnastics team in a Mid-American Conference dual at Eastern Michigan in the Eagles' George Gervin GameAbove Center.
Eastern Michigan won the meet with a 193.525 team score, improving to 1-1, 1-0 MAC. The Chippewas, 0-2, 0-1, finished with 192.925.
DeMers, a junior from Canton who was competing mere minutes from her hometown, won the uneven parallel bars with a 9.850 score, won the floor exercise (9.875), placed first on the balance beam (9.875) and tied for first on the vault (9.800).
DeMers' 9.875 beam score tied her career best. She won the all around with a 39.400 score, which is a 10th shy of a top 10 in program history.
"I really think Hannah thrives on her team and their support," CMU coach Christine MacDonald said. "I think for Hannah being able to get out and there and compete in front of friends and family and put her hard work on display – that's really what she did tonight.
"She trusted her gymnastics tonight and had a really good flow with it."
Also for the Chippewas, Sierra DeMarinis was second to DeMers on beam Avah Anthes placed fourth on vault, Savana Kotas was fourth and Audriana Hammond was fifth on bars, and Aleysia Kolyvanova and Katie Kowalski placed fourth and fifth, respectively, on floor.
The Chippewas posted a season-best 48.850 on beam, their final rotation of the night.
"I really thought they showed great resilience tonight," MacDonald said. "We started off strong and we finished strong. We had some uncharacteristic mistakes, but throughout the meet the energy never dropped, the team was focused, and we really showed some composure.
"I think when you can finish on the balance beam and put up a season-high score it exemplifies their true commitment to the details and to finishing strong as a team. They never stop fighting, they never stop trying. We have work to do, and we'll go back and do that work and we'll come out stronger for it."
