Field Hockey Explodes To 6-0 Win
10/16/2022 5:47:00 PM | Field Hockey
ST. LOUIS, Mo. – A rewarding result for a long season of growth.
An explosive performance from the Central Michigan field hockey team allowed the Chippewas to snap their 13-game losing streak on Sunday and shut out nonleague opponent Lindenwood, 6-0, at Thomas Field.
CMU, which won its season opener against Saint Louis on Aug. 26, is now 2-13.
"We've really been trying to measure our progress on the season game by game and not really focusing on the outcome," first-year CMU coach Jennifer Johnstone said. "I think that we as a team can feel the progress we've made, even between our Ohio games, watching our first (Sept. 2) Ohio game would not do us justice to the progress we've made defensively and on attack (on Friday).
"It's definitely nice for us to get a win because I feel like they've been working so hard for it, and it was something that was long overdue, for sure."
Amelia Lane and Rachel Ruttenberg scored two goals apiece, each of their firsts falling in the opening quarter. Both were assisted by Kate Biglin, who scored in the second quarter. Lane's second goal gave the Chippewas a 4-0 halftime lead.
Ruttenberg scored in the third quarter, assisted by Caroline Beairsto, and Alice O'Hagan topped it off in the fourth with help from Lane and Kaitlyn Bowker.
The Chippewas posted a season-high 16 shots on goal to the Lions' three and led, 11-4, in penalty corners.
"We went with a more attacking system today," Johnstone said. "We tried something that I've been wanting to try for a bit but we've been dealing with some injuries and didn't have the personnel necessary to be able to execute it correctly.
"We tried it today, knowing that we're going into Michigan State and Miami (Ohio) this week, just to see what benefits and advantages it would have for us. It certainly helped us generate a lot more attack and use our speed in transition, so it definitely helped us succeed today."
Freshman goalkeeper Maja Halasz posted her first career win and first shutout with three saves.
CMU has three games left in the season, all of which are scheduled for Cristy Freese Field. The Chippewas are scheduled to play host to non-conference opponent Michigan State on Wednesday, Oct. 19 (3 p.m.). The final two Mid-American Conference games are set for Oct. 21 vs. Miami and Oct. 29 vs. Longwood on Oct. 29.
"Ultimately, we try to measure our success and get 1 percent better every time we step on the field to practice and every game we play," Johnstone said. "One thing about this team is that they fight. They fight hard for four quarters and never give up. I think that's a cornerstone of our program that we're instilling in them, and we're going to continue to push the level when it comes to skill, hockey IQ, and game understanding.
"They're laying the foundation for the future of this program and what we hope to do in the future for sure. Our seniors have been a huge part in helping with their leadership and we're looking forward to celebrating them (senior day) at our Longwood game."
