2/18/2023 3:26:00 PM | Women's Basketball
ATHENS, Ohio – They made a game of it in the second half, but in the end, the Central Michigan women's basketball team didn't have enough to close the deal on Saturday in dropping an 83-75 Mid-American Conference game to Ohio at the Bobcats' Convocation Center.
The loss ended CMU's two-game win streak. The Chippewas (6-19, 4-10 MAC) play host to Bowling Green on Wednesday, Feb. 22 at McGuirk Arena. The Falcons are 23-3, 12-2 and ranked sixth in the collegeinsider.com mid-major top 25.
The Chippewas trailed, 57-37, at halftime on Saturday at Ohio (6-19, 4-10) and then twice surged to within five, the second time at 67-62 on a Bridget Utberg 3-pointer with 2:52 remaining in the third quarter.
But Ohio answered with an 8-0 run to end the third for a 75-62 lead. Jaya McClure hit two 3-pointers in a 34-second span to lead the Bobcat spurt.
The Chippewas never seriously threatened in the fourth quarter and never got their deficit under double digits until less than 25 seconds remained.
Utberg hit six of her eight 3-point tries en route to 20 points in leading the Chippewas, who tied their season high with 12 triples.
CMU made 42.9 percent of its 3-point attempts, but finished just 38.5 percent from the field overall. Ohio matched CMU with 12 long-range buckets and made 51.6 percent of its field goal tries on the day.
