Senior Hannah DeMers posts top scores in three of four events, wins the all-around competition with a 39.525; Chippewas notch second-highest team score of the season but fall to 3-1 in MAC competition.
KALAMAZOO, Mich.—Senior Hannah DeMers won the all-around competition by posting top scores in three of the four events, but it was not enough as the Central Michigan Gymnastics team came out on the short end of a 196.725-195.825 meet at Western Michigan Sunday at University Arena. With the loss, Central Michigan moves to 5-2 in head-to-head competition on the year and 3-1 in MAC meets.
Central Michigan's 195.825 score marked the Chippewas' second-highest team score of the year.
"We're gaining ground," Central Michigan Head Coach Christine MacDonald said. "We started off strong on bars with a solid team score of 49.20. Overall, we were not as sharp today and we opened the door too much today."
With a 39.525, DeMers posted the meet's best all-around score as she topped the charts in bars (9.875), vault (9.850), and beam (9.925). Freshman Luciana Alvarado-Reid added a 39.225 in the all-around.
"Individually, our two all-arounders—Hannah and Luci—did a tremendous job from start to finish," MacDonald said. "Hannah had a personal-best on the beam and it was also good to see Luci back in the all-around competition."
CMU jumped out to a quick lead with a strong overall performance on bars. The Chippewas registered the top two scores of the day as Alvarado-Reid and DeMers both posted 9.875s, while sophomore Lia Kimeciak scored a 9.850. Seniors Audriana Hammond and Ashley Veglucci pitched in 9.800s.
DeMers led the Chippewas on vault with a 9.850, while junior Elizabeth Cesarone and Kmieciak both posted 9.800s.
The Chippewas put up another solid floor score as three Chippewas scored above a 9.8. DeMers tied for third place with a 9.875, followed by Veglucci and Alvarado-Reid at 9.800.
CMU concluded the day on beam as senior Aleysia Kolyvanova and DeMers both scored a 9.925 and junior Adriana Bustelo tallied a 9.800.
Two MAC meets remain as Central Michigan gets back to MAC competition on Sunday, Feb. 26 at Ball State. The Chippewas will also travel to Kent State on March 12.
