Chippewas take series opener at Texas Rio Grande Valley

EDINBURG, Texas – Robby Morgan IV and Luke Sefcik each hit a three-run homer on Tuesday as the Central Michigan baseball team defeated Texas Rio Grande Valley, 14-8, in the opener of a five-game nonconference baseball series at UTGRV Baseball Stadium.

It was the Chippewas' (3-1) third consecutive victory and the first loss for the Vaqueros (3-1). The teams are scheduled to play a doubleheader on Friday, Feb. 24 (4 p.m. ET).

The Chippewas collected 13 hits and took advantage of three RGV errors, all of which came in the sixth inning when the Chippewas scored four runs to seize an 11-7 lead.

Sefcik, a redshirt freshman, hit his first home run as a Chippewa, in the first inning, to put CMU up, 3-0. Morgan blasted his third homer of the season in the fifth.

The Chippewas used a single, a walk, and an error to load the bases with one out in the sixth and game tied, 7-7. Morgan's groundball to shortstop went for an error and cleared the bases, giving CMU a 10-7 lead. Morgan later went to third on a wild pitch and then scored on another wild pitch to make it 11-7.

The Chippewas added a run in the seventh when Justin Simpson drew a bases-loaded walk and then tacked on two more in the eighth on Cole Prout's two-out, two-run single, extending the lead to 14-7.

Freshman right-hander Evan Waters (1-0), the fourth CMU pitcher, earned his first career win. He stuck out three, walked two and did not allow a hit while pitching the sixth and seventh innings.

Ben Vitas started for CMU and went 2 2/3 innings. Ryan Culley, Michael Conte, and Christian Mitchelle pitched in relief. They combined to strike out six, walk four and allow 11 hits.
