EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Fresh off earning the Mid-American Conference Field Athlete of the Week Award, Hayley Manners won the triple jump to highlight Central Michigan's performances on Friday at the Spartan Invitational.
Manners' winning distance measured 11.91 meters (39 feet, 1 inch) in the rain and chilly temperatures at Michigan State's Ralph Young Field. The meet, scheduled for Friday and Saturday, was shortened to one day because of weather.
CMUÂ posted 12 top-eight finishes in the meet which featured athletes representing some 25 universities, community colleges, and running clubs.
"Nobody really complained at all about the weather, they just went out and competed and did well," CMU Director of Track & Field/Cross Country Jenny Swieton said.
The Chippewas' 4x400-meter relay team of Libby Munderloh, Amelia Gouin, Grace Jenkins, and Emma Fountain placed second behind Michigan State with a time of 4:05.75.
Also taking second for CMU were Emma Francis in the 400 meter-hurdles, Mohogany Wells in the hammer throw, and Sarah Daniel in the long jump.
The Chippewas' Kaitlynn Rush placed third in the 100-meter dash; Annie Laurenz was third in the 400-meter hurdles; Aliyah Boeve placed third in the discus; and Emily McLean took third in the shot put.Â
CMU's Maija Rettelle finished fifth in the 400-meter dash, two spots ahead of teammate Jaci Rife. The Chippewas' Maddy Boyd placed seventh in the steeplechase and Rife placed eighth in the long jump.
"The pole vaulters are really turning the corner and starting to get more consistent," Swieton said. "The throwers did really well, especially considering the conditions, which kind of impact them a little bit more because the ring gets slippery.
"They placed really high which means they had really good performances even if they were not personal records."
The Chippewas will compete at the Oakland Golden Grizzlies Invitational on Friday and Saturday, April 7-8 in Rochester.Â
